VirtualBox 3D Deacceleration - OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image error

Hi Arch gurus,

I know this topic has been done to death but I have not found anyone with my specifc problem. I am running a Windows 10 guest. I have installed guest additions and everything runs fine except when I enable 3d acceleration. When I click the checkbox performance grinds to an unusable halt. I am unable to select any icon with the guest behaving as if the computer has frozen. Managing the host also becomes a chore. I am only able to shut down the VM via the console. If I wait a long time a modal message box will show on the screen saying "OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image", I am not sure what to do about this. I have a 12 core I7 with an nvidia 1060M card with 32GB of ram. I basically split it in half in terms of settings for the VM.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance!

Re: VirtualBox 3D Deacceleration - OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image error

I am not aware of any prior forum messages on this topic, so I'm not sure where the "done to death" comment comes from. I recommend you provide links to older threads for context, if you feel they relate to the same problem.

I very much doubt the "OfficetimelineSetup.exe" dialog has any relevance to your 3D acceleration problems, but to eliminate it as a cause, turn off 3D and then remove that app from the guest and turn 3D back on (after a reboot).

Also provide information on what graphics driver you are using on the host. The hardware specs may be meaningless if used with a driver that doesn't handle 3D acceleration well.

Re: VirtualBox 3D Deacceleration - OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image error

I confused the virtualbox board as the arch one, they use the same theme. Anyways I removed office and I still get the monster slowdown.

Does this provide enough info?

grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

Does the windows 10 device manager  see an intel, nvidia or other type of graphics card ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

I do not think so. When I look under display adapter all I see is VirtualBox Graphics Adapter (WDDM). I take it that is my issue. I have VT-x enabled though.

Re: VirtualBox 3D Deacceleration - OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image error

All info wrt passing through a videocard to a VM seems to be for qemu/kvm and (to a lesser extent) Xen , not virtualbox.

Did you install guest additions from the iso in the archlinux virtualbox-guest-iso package ?

Your system appears to be a hybrid graphics / Nvidia Optimus system.
What does X see as your primary card ?

$ glxinfo -B    # comes with mesa-demos package

thanks for the reply.

I did install guest additions. I did so using the iso and mounting it as a virtual drive. I installed it by forcing the Win10 guest into safemode. Still no luck.

The output from the command

Re: VirtualBox 3D Deacceleration - OfficetimelineSetup.exe bad image error

So the more powerful discrete card is in use and vbox should send graphics commands from the guest to it.

Please create a fresh VM and do a minimal install of windows 10 with a recent version[1] .

Does enabling 3D accelaration in that one give the same symptoms ?

If you're using windows 10 Home or Pro , use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar … ndows10ISO
Incase you're using an enterprise  version , check with your IT department for an installation iso.
