My set up: i3, rxvt-unicode-pixbuf, lxappearance, firefox
My issue: As I install ttf-roboto (or some other) font from repository, it immediately becomes my system-wide font. When I open a new terminal window after install I immediately see the new font applied.
$ cat .Xresources | grep font
URxvt.font: xft:monaco:size=11
URxvt.perl-ext-common: resize-font
!! resize-font
URxvt.resize-font.smaller: C-Down
URxvt.resize-font.bigger: C-Up$ cat .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini | grep font
gtk-font-name=Cantarell 11How can I just install a new font without it being my main system one?

Leave that poor cat alone!
grep font ~/.gtkrc-2.0Are you merging the .Xresources file in your desktop startup script?
I always set all the fonts to the sans-serif & monospace aliases and use ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf to define which font to use for the alias.
For example:
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
<alias>
<family>monospace</family>
<prefer><family>Inconsolata</family></prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>serif</family>
<prefer><family>Times New Roman</family></prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>sans-serif</family>
<prefer><family>Microsoft Sans Serif</family></prefer>
</alias>

I do merge
[[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge -I$HOME ~/.XresourcesI created this fontconfig but it didn't help.

Why are you using the -I option?
And why bother checking for ~/.Xresources? You know it exists.
You should probably post the entire file and describe how exactly you are starting your desktop in as much detail as possible.
I created this fontconfig but it didn't help.
That was just an example, it won't work for you unless you have the Windows 10 fonts on your system.

No idea if it's related to the issue at hand, but if that is your xinitrc, it is missing some important parts.

The font was changing because of URxvt.font option in ~/.Xresources
The problem is solved by creating a valid font config which explains to the system what "monospace" is.
If you, just like me, don't understand much from some archwiki pages then you can read gentoo wiki instead. Fonts issue is the case.
