Hi linux newb here is there a way to filter/list the installed packes on my system by categories? Something similar to pacman -Q that lists based on package type maybe? If not what are some better ways to manage and view installed packages?
Thanks

do you mean package groups (like base, gnome, xorg, ...) or being 'library or application' or by usage (e.g. Browser, Utility, File Manager, Photo Viewer, ...)?
Either of the latter 2 would be fine, however ideally something that would list and group all installed packages, not just applications

Try these:
pacman -Sg
pacman -Sg group_name
pacman -Sl
pacman -Sl core
pacman -Ss browser | lessOption:
-Sg -display groups
-Sl -display repo type: core, community, extra, multilib, testing (if type of repo is enabled in /etc/pacman.conf so pacman db is updated with list of repo)
-Ss -search for string you would be interested. I personally pipe it to less, so I can easier search by pressing /serached_string (or //serached_string) and pressing n or N.
Hope I helped.

Group by what? And what is an "application"? Whatever it is, there is no distinction between "application" packages and other packages.
I'm wondering if this could be an X-Y problem. What purpose would this grouping serve? Or in other words, what do you hope to accomplish with this grouped listing?
