How do I prevent multiple instances of Mplayer and VLC?

I use OpenBox3 with thunar file manager. When I click on the second video file, a new mplayer or VLC instance comes up, instead of using the original one.

How do I prevent this?

i think it is a setting in VLC options atleast, and probably mplayer as well.
