.config not being used

To my surprise, today when I booted my Arch system all my settings were gone. These are my Gnome settings, termite settings, nautilus settings, etc... I realized that these are all the settings contained within the ~/.config directory, as other settings siting in my home directory such as firefox or thunderbird work just fine.

So it seems the ~/.config folder is being bypassed or something. Where is this specified in the system? Any idea how to fix it? Thanks.

Edit: Just spotted a new folder in my home directory with name "$HOME" so its path is '/usr/username/home/$HOME' literally. This is so weird! Maybe something I set up wrong from my .profile?

Likely. Also read your shell history and see you didn't do something (else) unwise...

Re: .config not being used

Have you recently tried to set XDG_CONFIG_HOME without recognizing the difference between single and double quotes in the shell?
