How can I startx from ssh without a display manager?

I want to ssh into a machine and run "startx" so that the local monitor will run the desktop environment as if I typed "startx" from the local tty but it does not work. It does this

$ startx

/usr/lib/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console

Ho can I trick it into working?

I suspect you could also set up (but not enable) a custom autologin service on a specific tty, and configure your .profile to autostart X on that tty.  So then when you log in via ssh, you'd just need to start the autologin service.
