[First time posting, sorry if I mess something up in terms of formatting/etiquette!]
Just rebooted for the first time in a fortnight after running "pacman -Syu" several times since and now, instead of Gnome logging in automatically, the boot process looks like it's stopping at:
[OK] Reached target Graphical Interface
I can get to a different tty using ctrl-alt-f2 and log in successfully. I can even ssh in from another machine and see other services have started and are working away.
After looking around the Newbie Corner, I don't think it's a problem with the ownership of / because that's still root:

WaylandEnable=falseIt's already uncommented, I did that months ago because Wayland was being troublesome, and I understand this forces Gnome to try and use Xorg instead. As for /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

You appear to have an NVIDIA graphics card with the nouveau driver blacklisted, did you install the proprietary drivers using pacman?

Yes, it's an Ion 2 in an old EeeBox. I didn't use pacman, sadly; following the Wiki, I ended up using aur/nvidia-340xx installed with Yay.
I'm not dependant on them though, if using nouveau is a solution that's great. I tried following the Wiki instructions to switch, but may have made a mistake somewhere and ended up reverting back to nvidia-340xx.

Do you also have nvidia-340xx-utils installed?

I do, I installed that with yay too.

Did Yay also install the matching DKMS package? Sounds like perhaps your kernel modules haven't been rebuilt after a kernel upgrade.
The nouveau drivers would be simpler to manage, how exactly did you try to switch?

Did you create an X.org configuration file to force the nouveau driver?

I created the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf file from the WIki, is that the one you're talking about? Sorry if I'm being dense here.
ls -lh /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Yes, that's what I meant.
If you haven't rebooted then try removing the nvidia module.
Are we sure the nouveau driver supports your card? I haven't checked ![]()

I think it's supported, the nouveau compatibility matrix lists it under the NV50 family.
I've removed nvidia-340xx and nvidia-340xx-utils now, and restarted again for good measure. It's still stuck at the same place

Check dmesg on what nouveau thinks about your GPU.

OK, if you've removed the proprietary drivers then you no longer need the X.org configuration file so you can remove that to eliminate it as the source of the problem.
If you still can't get to the desktop then try loading a simple window manager without a display manager by running this from a console login:
startx /usr/bin/openboxInstall openbox first if you haven't got it already, obviously.

Alright, this is a bit weird, but I'm recording it here for posterity...
First, this is what dmesg had to say about nouveau:

I'm sorry, I didn't capture it all to show it here, I just restarted out of frustration. After logging in with a different tty, I ran "startx /usr/bin/openbox" and got a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Progress! Nothing responded, but still progress. I ssh'd into the machine, ran "sudo killall openbox", and got it back to the console. Then I restarted it again (I can't help it, the little voice in my head says "Have you tried turning it off and on again" a lot) and... Gnome started and logged itself in.
I have no idea what just happened!
So, I guess I should work out how to mark this closed solved. Thanks Head_on_a_Stick & Seth, I really appreciate it!

Your GNOME is likely to run on wayland and not xorg now. To fix your xorg remove your custom configurations and {lib32-,}nvidia-340xx-utils

I hadn't thought of that... running "echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE" while logged in I get "x11", so the setting in /etc/gdm/custom.conf is still working
I've removed the other packages too, thanks!
