Weird Split Displays, GNOME, Surface Studio, and DisplayPort MST

Trying to get GNOME to run on an MS Surface Studio 1, running Arch with the proprietary nvidia driver as it has a GTX 965M in it.  It also has a 4500x3000 monitor, and it presents itself to GNOME (and xrandr) as two separate displays.    Fun, but hard to use.

In other words, I'm seeing what is shown here: https://twitter.com/bketelsen/status/957640509790523392.    Said thread references a post on the arch forum (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=214841) which suggests setting a modeline on VIRTUAL1 and then overlaying DP-0 and DP-1 on it.   Unfortunately, VIRTUAL1 is unavailable with the NVIDIA driver.   I've tried using the unconnected DP-3 to no avail.  Specifically, xrandr didn't like the modeline created by cvt.

The closest I've got is from https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions … o_screens/.   However, that only seems to work with other DEs such as XFCE.  GNOME doesn't honor what's set up by the --setmonitor flag either if I set it in a terminal and restart the shell, or if I launch GNOME out of xinit.

I've also tried a variety of xorg.conf settings to no avail.   Most recently, this one:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "MetaModes" "2250x3000+0+0, 2250x3000+2250+0"
    Option "MetaModeOrientation" "RightOf"
    Option "nvidiaXineramaInfo" "FALSE"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Nouveau just doesn't work.

Unfortunately, I'm kind of tied to gnome these days, so I'd rather not switch DEs if I can help it.    It seems if I can get GNOME to play dumb and ignore multiple monitors, I'd be good to go.   I don't expect I'll be plugging another display in anytime soon.    Any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks!
