Awhile back Steam stopped accepting any text from the keyboard. (I can still navigate menus with the keyboard) I've tried uninstalling Steam and deleting all of the Steam config files with no luck. I've also tried recreating the system in a virtual machine, and the issue is not popping up at all. There's always the option of just completely reinstalling the system from scratch; but, I would prefer to avoid that if possible. This impacts games using the keyboard, as well. Does anyone have any idea of where I should look to address this problem? Could this related to the graphics drivers?

Does it happen with a new user account?

Yeah, it happens even with a fresh user account. I just created a new user with:
useradd -m teststeamand gave it password. Steam pulls in some update files upon launching Steam, and won't, at least, display text input when attempting to login.

Something related to the input focus/window manager?
Try switching your window manager for a while (some light and user friendly wms: openbox, icewm, jvm...)

I tried installing gnome-shell, which ships with SteamOS, with the same issue cropping up.

Which Desktop environment/Window manager you're using?Does the problem persist if you switch DE?

I'm using Cinnamon. The problem still persists after switching to GNOME, which steam uses for their Linux distribution.

This may be a bug with steam itself, you could try using beta client and see if things get better

If using Wayland, try Xorg.
Also, i'd still try to use openbox.
