Previews broken in Dolphin

Is anyone else having problems with Dolphin not showing previews any more? Specifically, previews in the side pane, and also "in-line" in the main pane.

I've tested text, JPG, PNG, TIFF, PDF, and SVG. The preview generation pauses for two second, then refreshes as as the generic file icon.

I have the relevant boxes ticked in Settings > Configure Dolphin… > General > Previews. I've restarted plasmashell. Everything is up-to-date, and I have the following packages installed:

* dolphin 19.04.2-1
* dolphin-plugins 19.04.2-1
* kdegraphics-thumbnailers 19.04.2-1
* kdesdk-thumbnailers 19.04.2-1

I've also tried launching dolphin from the terminal, but there are no error messages.

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

I'm not getting that behaviour. When I go to Control > Panels > Information, the preview is displayed properly. I have a Preview  button in my Toolbar and when I click it it toggles the preview and the generic icon. All OK there.

However I don't use dolphin-plugins, kdegraphics-thumbnailers nor kdesdk-thumbnailers. Maybe they are the once giving you the bug. What do use these for?

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

Thank you for the reply. I just checked on my other Arch system, and thumbnails are working fine, with the same packages installed, which is odd.

I'm not entirely sure.

kdegraphics-thumbnailers is required by kdegraphics-meta and the description is "Thumbnailers for various graphics file formats".

kdesdk-thumbnailers is required by kdesdk-meta with description "Plugins for the thumbnailing system".

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

I checked and they are optional dependencies for dolphin perhaps used by kdesdk. You can regenerate a new dolphinrc located in your .config folder. It will erase all your setting. You can copy it as dolphinrc.bak if you want the option to get back to it. Restart dolphin and see if it solves. There is a plugins list for previews in dolphinrc and one of them might be the culprit.

Good idea. Unfortunately that didn't seem to help. I noticed that some dolphin settings weren't reset, so I also moved the directory at ~/.local/share/dolphin. This still didn't help. I wonder if there's another directory/cache somewhere else that is to blame, because there are probably other parts of KDE that also require previews. I moved ~/.cache/thumbnails, but that didn't help either.

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

Was there ever any progress made with this issue? I've been having the same problem for the past couple of weeks, but I haven't had a chance to look into it until now.

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

Works fine here, do you get any terminal output if you run dolphin from a terminal that might hint at the issue?

Edit: You might not have terminal output, your journal might be more talkative though

Run

journalctl -f

while navigating to a folder you expect to have thumbnails from if you don't get anything conclusive from that try

kdebugdialog5 #enable kio_file, KImageIO, ,kio_thumbnail
kdebugsettings #Set dolphin to debug

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

Thanks for the suggestion. When I navigate to a folder that normally would have thumbnails, (6 comic books) I find just default icons for their file type.

journalctl -f Returns this relevant looking red, multiple times.

This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Process 24215 (thumbnail.so) of user 1000 dumped core.

#3  0x0000003000000018 n/a (n/a)

Also, I have libQt5Core.so.5.13.0 installed. I reinstalled qt5-base with no change, and I'm not sure which package I could try reinstalling to satisfy the suggestion of journalctl about the Qt platform plugin.

Thanks!

I use Dolphin infrequently, so I checked again. It looks like it's fine now. I'm not sure if it's a recent update or perhaps some restarts that fixed it for me?

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

You should run a complete system update and reboot or at least restart KDE to ensure everything references up to date libraries.

Re: Previews broken in Dolphin

Well I can't really explain this but my previews just started working again this morning. I didn't do anything I can think of to get this result. Also, I run a full update at least every other day and reboot often as well which didn't have any effect on this issue over the past couple of weeks.
