[SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

What seems to be the culprit:

ERROR: CONFIG: Line 43: binsym Mod4+i exec firefox
ERROR: CONFIG:             ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ERROR: FYI: You are using i3 version 4.16.1 (2019-01-27)
ERROR: Could not translate string to key symbol: "cpc"
ERROR: Received ConfigureNotify for unknown window 0x00800000
ERROR: Received ExposeEvent for unknown window 0x00800000
(this repeats for a bit, and towards the bottom of the error message the number changes to 0x00800001, and then in the bottom 3 lines it becomes 0x00800002)

Please help, I hope I have provided enough information. Sorry that I couldn't put in the whole message, as the "nagbar" window that opens on a bad config doesn't seem to have any copy and paste capabilities.

The hotkey seems to follow the gist of what I found on the i3 user's guide:
bindsym f exec firefox

(corrected based on later comments, as this is not a direct copy and paste)

Re: [SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

Every i3 config example I have seen uses $mod (not Mod4). Does it work if you replace Mod4 with $mod?

If not, please post your entire i3 config file (use [ code ] tags or a pastebin client).

Re: [SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

My termite hotkey works with Mod4, but I tested with $mod and it didn't work either.

# i3 config file (v4)
#
# Please see https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html for a complete reference!
#
# This config file uses keycodes (bindsym) and was written for the QWERTY
# layout.
#
# To get a config file with the same key positions, but for your current
# layout, use the i3-config-wizard
#

# Font for window titles. Will also be used by the bar unless a different font
# is used in the bar {} block below.
font pango:monospace 8

# This font is widely installed, provides lots of unicode glyphs, right-to-left
# text rendering and scalability on retina/hidpi displays (thanks to pango).
#font pango:DejaVu Sans Mono 8

# Before i3 v4.8, we used to recommend this one as the default:
# font -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-C-70-iso10646-1
# The font above is very space-efficient, that is, it looks good, sharp and
# clear in small sizes. However, its unicode glyph coverage is limited, the old
# X core fonts rendering does not support right-to-left and this being a bitmap
# font, it doesn't scale on retina/hidpi displays.

Re: [SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

#binsym Mod4+i exec firefox

This is not what you posted in your original question. Do you see the typo?

I do that so I can run i3 and not get errors (so I can actually access this site). I would like to uncomment it, but I get the error described in OP every time I do. I will remove the # from the post so that it is clear that the broken version is shown.

EDIT: Oh no, I see the typo now xD
Is it obvious that I did badly in English class in school?

Thank you for your help wink

Re: [SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

You're welcome, and looking again at your first post, you had the typo there too and I missed it. In any event, thanks for marking this solved.

Re: [SOLVED] Having trouble creating hotkey for firefox in i3-gaps

I actually added the typo into the first post retroactively as I must have made a mistake in typing it in originally.
