Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

Currently, I've installed the whole noto-fonts-all pack, any new Firefox profile defaults to Hack font for all font types: https://imgur.com/a/8pHpHYq

And this applies to other languages as well, not just the Latin fonts. How do I debug this? I can't go through all the settings for each font type and set it to something more readable every time.

What font configuration have you performed?  Such as setting a default sans, serif and monospace font.

I've done nothing with those, only used KDE's System Settings utility to let it save KDE defaults of Noto for every category.

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

What are the current defaults?

fc-match monospace
fc-match serif
fc-match sans

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

...

$ fc-match monospace
Hack-Regular.ttf: "Hack" "Regular
$ fc-match serif
Hack-Regular.ttf: "Hack" "Regular"
$ fc-match sans
Hack-Regular.ttf: "Hack" "Regular"

... Just kill me. Why the hell does System Settings do nothing?

And why aren't other software affected just as Firefox is?

What other software?  If it is KDE based possibly KDE#Fonts.

...? I'm saying other software doesn't seem to honor the fc-match fonts and uses Noto as specified in KDE's System Settings. How do I get fontconfig to use whatever I set on System Settings?

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

You don't. The system settings thing tells KDE (or maybe Qt) applications what fonts to use (looke up in some init file), it doesn't alter the default matching of fontconfig at all.
You'll have to fire up a text editor here.
There're also some config file for noto installed to /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ - symlinking them to /etc/fonts/conf.d might do.

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

Thank you, running sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/66-noto-* /etc/fonts/conf.d/ fixed it. But I'm getting sick of these seemingly rote tasks that Arch requires. Is there anyway to automate  no-brainer stuff like these?

Buy an android tablet?
Part of arch is to know (thus before "learn") how the system works. If that's not for you, you're using the wrong distro.

In this case, there's no way to know whether you want to use noto by default by merely installing it and this distro does not take decisions for you. Welcome to the jungle.

No, I just want the distro to be consistent with whatever tens or hundreds of configuration options it has. Having two different utility for seemingly a single thing causes misunderstanding to say the least.

I also made symbolic link for noto-cjk but I'm still facing similar issue for non-Latin fonts. Is it safe to modify the priorities in the presets? Will it be overwritten if there are font updates and are there any recommended way to do that?

To elaborate on this, Arch Wiki says using Font Control Panel of DEs should create user-specific settings in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/. That doesn't seem to hold true in my case.

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

Which wiki page says that? I've not used KDE in years but it has always written a local font configuration to the global KDE configuration and had no impact on eg. gtk applications (let alone firefox which is an entirely different beast)
Also that's neither a distro thing, nor what you suggested before when you asked for "anyway to automate  no-brainer stuff"

After some research, I know cjk has only to do with Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

I want to know if there's any font-config pattern that matches every language supported to the fonts in the Noto pack rather than each language. I found how to do it for each language but yeah, that's not going to cut it. Or a way to automatically generate the conf file.

Re: Firefox is defaulting to monospace font Hack for all types

Yes, thus "c, j and k"…

There's no config in the package and so I'm afraid someone will have to write it, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes

Also how is that still related to this thread? I suggest you open a new one, specifically addressing the "glyphs of the world" issues which is much different from the initial "ttf-hack is used anywhere".
