When I change an account's password using passwd (or useradd/usermod -p <password>), and attempt to login using the console (i.e. tty1-8), I am returned the status: "Login Incorrect".
I am currently using the gnome DE and gdm DM. If I create an account using the gnome GUI, I am able to log in said user using gdm without a problem; however, if I attempt to log in said user using a tty console, using the same password, the console still returns "Login Incorrect".
My default account (i.e. the one made when I first installed arch) can still login to both gdm and the console without a problem. As a further test, I logged in to another console using my default account, did:
$sudo su
#passwdCuriously, passwd did not prompt me to re-enter a password for the root account. Anyway, I exited root and this time just typed in:
$su
password:And entered the new root password I set above. I was able to get into the root shell just fine. However, when I tried to login as root in a tty, making sure I was typing the same password as before, I was still told "Login Incorrect". I retried the su command in my default account, typed in the same root password I had set earlier, and was able to enter the root shell successfully. I made sure that I did indeed set the root password and not my default account's (re-logged in multiple times using the same password on the default account).
Also, as another test, I created a test account called "monkey" using the gnome gui, having the user input a password on first login. I set the pass for the account "monkey" to "monkey". Logged out to gdm. Re-logged in using the password "monkey", worked just fine. Tried to log in as "monkey" on the console, using the password "monkey". Again was told "Login Incorrect". As a further test, I changed "monkey" 's password from "monkey" to "monkey15", using passwd. Again, logged out to gdm, logged back in using the new password, was successful. Attempted to login using the console. Again was told "Login Incorrect"
I am curious, does this sound like user error on my part? Or is it a problem with either passwd, the gdm DM, PAM, or some other process? Basically, when I add a user and set their password from the command line, I want them to be able to login both using the console and the display manager. For whatever reason, I am unable to at the moment.

Maybe your keymap in /etc/vconsole.conf is an issue? Just a guess...

I second a faulty vconsole.conf. Did you maybe forget to set the correct keyboard layout?

Contents of /etc/pam.d/login:
#%PAM-1.0

auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth include system-local-login

There a good wiki page on how to set one up properly?
Weird, I didn't set one up on my other arch install and have not encountered the same issue. Particular reason why I'm encountering errors now? I am still curious why my default account's pass works on both. Also, why accounts created can login through the display manager and not the console. Unless that is precisely what vconsole.conf is for. . .haha

Nevermind on the last paragraph. Read the wiki. found out Xorg and console have two different variables. Funny what a little (targeted) reading can solve. . .
Anyway, will mark thread as solved if issue is fixed after.

So setting the keymap in vconsole.conf fixes the problem for normal accounts. I.e. creating a test account called "monkey" with the password "monkey" and am able to log in to the console and display manager.
Now I have a different problem. Please inform me if this is a separate issue. Will move to another thread if need be:
I reset root's password using
$sudo su
#passwdand
$sudo passwd rootThe password works when typing
$sufrom my non-root admin account. But, alas, does not work in console. Is this a similar issue to what I was experiencing above? Or does root's password need to be reset using the live media?
