I've create an desktop session file in /usr/share/xsessions to start an script which is located in /usr/local/bin.
The script starts compiz just normally with "compiz &" and then (next line) plank &. But plank just doesn't start. I tried to replace it with some other program. Same effect. Nothing in ~/.xsession-errors. Can someone tell me what the problem could be or how I could better debug it? I'm using lightdm as login manager. Lightdm shows my custom DE. But when I login I just get an blank screen with an mouse cursor. My second program (plank in this case) does not start.

Assuming your script is called, please post it, not some vague description. Eg. I'm not sure how a session that forks everything could last for very long.

It is very easy.
#/bin/bash
compiz &
plank &Lightdm recognizes the session file and it also executes the bash script. But for whatever reason it only executes compiz. Plank or any other application won't be executed.

You could throw in some "echo stage 1 >> /tmp/script.log" to see where the script stops processing and also trail w/ eg. some unforked "xterm" to have
a) a window
b) sth. keeping the session running
