Old BIOS and new USB-harddisk

I have a old pc here, BIOS stated buid 01/04/10, and wish to install and boot Linux to a new WD USB-HDD. The pc can boot from USB-stick and installation goes okay. But after the installation and at the first boot GRUB2 informs me:

no such device <UUID-number>
can not get C/H/S values.

or like that.

In the beginning this device had a GUID partition table but I changed it to MBR by gdisk.

Will there be any chance to boot from this new disk?

TIA
