VLC won't display .vtt subtitles

Hello,

I've been attempting to watch a video in VLC player, but have encountered an issue with the subtitles.  VLC can detect the .vtt subtitle files, but it doesn't display them.  When I converted the .vtt files to .srt, they did then display, so I am confident most of my settings must be configured correctly, but I am still wondering why I cannot get the .vtt files to display.  Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong here?
