[Solved] OpenTTD - No sound at all

Hi,

First of all, to be honest, I don't know much about sound management in Linux.
I've read parts of the wiki, but I always end up looking at someone's solution when I get issues.

Anyway, I wanted to give OpenTTD a try today, so as per the wiki, I installed openttd, openttd-opengfx and openttd-opensfx (as well as the in-game OpenMSX content)

When running OpenTTD, here's what I see in the console:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_route.c:869:(find_matching_chmap) Found no matching channel map
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-1000/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed

I've tried with the speakers or a headset, same error.
In Pavucontrol, OpenTTD is listed in the "playback" tab as an application.

Do I need to install something more, or is there a configuration issue somewhere?

OpenTTD version: 1.9.1

You might need to install jack, but it looks like it failed with alsa also.  Possibly you might need to change configuration in pavucontrol.

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

Re: [Solved] OpenTTD - No sound at all

Hi,

Seems like jack is already there. I've noticed from the wiki that alsa-plugins is supposed to help jack "play nice" with ALSA so I gave it a try.
This resulted in a bit more errors, some being different:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.center_lfe
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.side
ALSA lib pcm_route.c:869:(find_matching_chmap) Found no matching channel map
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-1000/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-1000/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed
ALSA lib pcm_oss.c:377:(_snd_pcm_oss_open) Unknown field port
ALSA lib pcm_oss.c:377:(_snd_pcm_oss_open) Unknown field port
ALSA lib pcm_usb_stream.c:486:(_snd_pcm_usb_stream_open) Invalid type for card
ALSA lib pcm_usb_stream.c:486:(_snd_pcm_usb_stream_open) Invalid type for card
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-1000/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed

As far as pavucontrol is concered, there's not much configuration I can do over here except changing the output device and volumes...

Anything else you could suggest?

Thanks

To fix this particular error, you will want to install pulseaudio-alsa. In general it might be better to set up an offload to fluidsynth as detailed here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Op … ot_playing

Also please change your title to something that at least hints at the actual problem you have.

@V1del, Sorry, I started writing the title, then started out the post with the idea of going back to the title later on... Well I forgot sad

@V1del(again): Didn't try yet, I've just came back to change the title for now, I'll try that as soon as possible!

Have you installed timidity++ and a soundfont?

I did install timidity++ as stated per the wiki, however I didn't install the soundfont.
After installing the soundfont freepats-general-midi and enabling it in /etc/timidity++/timidity.cfg and a reboot, it was still not working.

However, after installing pulseaudio-alsa as suggested by @V1del, the sound was working!

I suppose both suggestions were necessary in this case, thank you very much you two!

As a side note, while everything runs fine, I appear to still have the same error messages in the logs:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1108:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
ALSA lib pcm.c:2564:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.rear

Still, I'll be marking this as resolved smile
