Gimpshop and cinepaint are gimp derivatives, so I don't think he'd want those.

Arch = Debian + Gentoo + Bleeding edge software - annoyances. wink

You can give Lightzone a try. It is free on Linux and it works pretty well. you can get it from here:

Well, you have the ImageMagick tools for quick editing through CLI, feh can do some basic rotation and resizing. F-Spot and gThumb are two nice alternatives with some image altering functions.

I'm going to assume you're looking for simple functions, like rotating, cropping, resizing, etc..

Gimp is hard in the beginning yes, but it's great when you find out how to use it (I struggled with finding out about layers and that you only can operate on "selected" areas of the image/layer)

Do you have a preferred toolkit? Kolourpaint is a simple MS Paint clone for KDE, gnupaint is in GTK2 but kolourpaint is better imo. If you don't mind a funny childish application you might try tuxpaint tongue

Also can you say what features you're looking for with simple? Is it just rotating images, or do you want to write text on images or draw on them etc too?

Re: Ideas about photo editor

Dude, he just wants a photo editor.  You do GIMP a dis-service by recommending it as one.  Windows has loads of dyed-in-the-wool photo editors that do nothing more than edit photos - I think he's just looking for a good *nix recommendation!

I found something called almara - lightzone uses Java - ewwww!

What about picasa under WINE?  I might try that!

I did try digikam but for me is not the same as Gimp. IMO The Gimp is the best program for editing photos.

These days I'm trying out F-Spot. It's a photo organizer and it has several edition features that maybe can be suitable for your needs...

Re: Ideas about photo editor

I agree that digikam is mighty fine for basic (actually, quite more than basic) photo manipulation... what's wrong with it?
Gimp may have more options, but it's approach is way less... errr, intuitive.

Gimp is like Photoshop for Windows and IMO you cannot compare digikam with Gimp but you can compare Gimp and Photoshop.

Re: Ideas about photo editor

I wouldn't even compare Gimp with Photoshop. The main reason is that Photoshop uses a plugin system (.8bf) which is a universal standard, while Gimp does not.
While their basic functionality is comparable, when you add plugin functionality Gimp is left miles behind.
LOADS of windows applications (even freeware viewers, like IrfanView) can manipulate 8bf plugins, but AFAIK there's no native Linux application that can treat them right... (leaving aside that both Photoshop and IrfanView work rather well under Wine).
What I said is that Digikam does a mighty fair job for more-than-basic photo manipulation.

Re: Ideas about photo editor

I'd like to add my support to this thread.  Living in the world of tiling WMs, gimp just flat-out pisses me off.  I've looked around and never found something to replace it.

Also, for quick tasks, gimp is overkill considering the load time.  As much as people may dislike the reference, I've always wanted the linux equivalent of MS Paint....

That was one of the aims of GimpShop. It's a parallel fork of Gimp that puts everything into a single container, and makes the menus/key shortcuts more Photoshop-like.

Ohhh!  Sorry.  Allow me to clarify - I have no problem with the language.  It's just that the associated GUI makes me want to tear my eyes out  lol

Until the gimp gets a healing brush, it will always be inferior.
