Hello,
I followed the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce#Sound_themes but I just can't make it work!
1) I have both libcanberra and libcanberra-pulse packages installed
$ pacman -Qs libcanberra
local/libcanberra 0.30+2+gc0620e4-2
local/libcanberra-pulse 0.30+2+gc0620e4-2
2) canberra-gtk-module is in GTK_MODULES
$ echo $GTK_MODULES
canberra-gtk-module:canberra-gtk-module
3) 'Enable event sounds' is checked in Settings Manager → Appearance → Settings tab
4) In the settings editor xsettings/Net/SoundThemeName is set to 'freedesktop'
$ ls /usr/share/sounds/
... freedesktop ...
5) The volume of 'System sounds' is turned up and unmuted in pavucontrol.
$ ls /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/trash-empty.oga
/usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/trash-empty.oga
$ canberra-gtk-play -f /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/trash-empty.oga
plays it back successfully and audible
$ touch file
then 'file' is moved to trash, and when the trash gets emptied, I don't hear a single thing.

libcanberra only supports some events. See http://git.0pointer.net/libcanberra.git … dule.c#n41.
Using a more comprehensive sound theme, like smooth, will get you more sound events.

uh-oh! Not even the bell sound?
This isn't really useful then.
Is libcanberra the only option under XFCE?
I like the sound collection that freedesktop has and I'm looking for something that can use them.

Is libcanberra the only option under XFCE?
AFAIK, yes. It's tied to GTK. However, it hasn't been updated since 2012 so its not being maintained anymore.
