LXDE not scaling correctly with HiDPI screen: xrandr good, xpyinfo bad

Trying to get Arch working on an HP Spectre X360 15-inch laptop. Apart from the wireless and the DPI, I've done OK so far.

Basically, xrandr looks like it reports the correct value of 287, but xpyinfo stubbornly stays at ~96. If I use xrandr --dpi, it fixes xdpyinfo but there's no change to anything onscreen. By changing the .XResources, I was able to get Firefox and icon labels on the desktop to scale correctly, but icons on the desktop and on the task bar do not scale up.

Just to throw another complication - I'd like to be able to use this with other screens and stuff without hardcoding the laptop's screen into the X config.

Is there any way to get things working properly?

Thanks.
