[Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

I hope this isn't as dumb an issue as it seems but I can't seem to find it anywhere on google. Basically I'm trying to use multiple tty sessions to increase my number of virtual workspaces as well as sort my workflow a bit better, problem is if I try to run a program on a different tty session (one that is logged in and started as a "new" session I get the following error :

(process:19088): Gtk-WARNING **: 07:45:48.488: Locale not supported by C library.
    Using the fallback 'C' locale.
[19088:19106:0722/074548.709666:ERROR:browser_process_sub_thread.cc(221)] Waited 3 ms for network service
Opening in existing browser session.

then it proceeds to open whatever process I tried to run in tty1 (for this I opened google-chrome-stable in tty2)

Thanks for the help

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

How are you starting these multiple sessions?  What DM/DE/WMs are you using?

Why do you think you need multiple tty's running X to get more virtual workspaces?  Just use a WM that provides multiple workspaces.

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

ctrl+alt+fX (X = whichever tty number I'm using) or sudo chvt X

i3 wm as mentioned in the first post

the way my keyboard is set up it's a pain to have more than 5 virtual workspaces per session and I'd like to seperate my gaming setup from my programming/workflow setup

Keeb is an ergodox with a jank programmers dvorak setup so the number row is neigh unusable for shortcuts

That's how you switch between ttys, that has nothing to do with starting sessions.

Nope, no such information was in the first post.

Then use something other than numbers.

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

Ok looks like it's just down to a misunderstanding of tty's. I assumed, since it opened a new i3 session and kept a seperate clipboard between both when they're open (after logging in and typing startx into both of them), that it was a seperate session similar to that of Kubuntu's activities.
How should I tag this now that it's "solved" is there something for "I was just dumb"

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

It sounds like you are running two seperate sessions.  But other than that I can't really make heads or tails of what you are saying.  I was still trying to get answers to what WM(s) you were using and how they were started.  Only in this last post was that information (indirectly) provided.

Note that the output in your first post was for a chrome which reported that it was opening the new url in the existing instance.  This looks like a bad behavior of chrome to me and perhaps worthy of a bug report once we get more information.  But certainly this is not all programs.  How did you get that output?  Did you run chrome from a terminal?  If so, clearly the terminal opened in the correct session.

So what programs actually have trouble?  Just chrome?

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

wow uh yeah it is just chrome, even chromium works (discord wont let me open multiple of it even between sessions but this isn't a huge issue as audio output (and probably input) goes between them for some reason. I should have tested further but if you could link me to a place I could report this bug with chrome on i3/arch that would be awesome. Also I noticed that i deleted the part about i3 in the first post by accident so sorry for the snarky "I already mentioned it"

Re: [Solved]Can't open programs on anything but tty1

The bug would have to go upstream as it's not an arch packaging issue.  It'd also not be related to arch or i3 - just differnt Xorg sessions with the same user on the same machine.  As it's chrome, not chromium, I'm not sure how much of a response you'd get as google takes all bug reports for chrome through chromium's dev channels, I believe.

So perhaps they've already fixed the problem if it works in chromium but not chrome.  Or perhaps they do something to chrome to prevent multiple instances, in which case it's likely intentional.  As a good work-around, you could check the man page for an option to "open in new instance" as that should circumvent the issue.
