Thanks for your further investigations liewkj. If I understand correctly, all these other issues are not strictly related to the bug we found no? I think it would be advisable to at least report the problem no matter how many other bugs we can encounter down the road.

It took me a while to figure out how to test VA-API with gstreamer-vaapi to be able to produce consistent test data. The gstreamer blacklist tends to hide the VA-API issues if libgstvaapi.so was blacklisted and gst-libav was used instead.

The state of Nouveau driver is indeed disappointing. H264 video decode acceleration is either completely broken or unstable. GNOME/Wayland/X11 would just hang during video playback or playback was interrupted. Though OpenGL/EGL has improved tremendously, robust accelerated video decoding is also very important especially for mobile and for people who would choose to stay with Nouveau instead of going with NVIDIA propriety blobs.
