[SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

My install keeps freezing for no apparent reason. It happens even when I'm barely using any resources, so it can't be running out of resources and having to wait. When this happens, the screen freezes and it doesn't accept any input, but if there's sound playing, that continues as normal. After anywhere between 10 seconds and a couple minutes, it will normally unfreeze and work normally again. I've been googling and can't find anything about this, as everyone else's posts don't come back and break sound too. Can anyone help me with this? Sorry for lack of detail but I really don't know what else to include. If it's relevant, this machine is a Dell G3 3579.

Edit: Alright I figured it out, my graphics drivers were broken. I used this to deal with a seemingly unrelated (but apparently not totally unrelated) issue and it happened to fix this too. The fix was to make a file at

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

with the contents of

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

Welcome to the arch linux forums redstoneguy12.  Please try the workaround from https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63159 to rule that out.
If that does not work please post the journal from a boot where a free occurred.

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

It's not at boot time where it freezes, it's randomly during use. Boots work fine, there is no problematic boot log to post and no broken boot to fix

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

Please try the workaround anyway to rule it out.
I meant a journal log filtered for the output of one boot,  the journal for a boot contains everything from startup to shutdown of that boot.

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

I can't use the workaround because I don't have a copy of the kernel they said you need to downgrade to. Also, that says it disables graphics to fix it, which is about the opposite of what I need. This is the log from about an hour, most of it would have been watching youtube: http://ix.io/1Qc8

I think I just caught it happening, the log when it did it was this:

Jul 31 16:52:56 lucas-laptop kernel: Asynchronous wait on fence i915:clflush:0 timed out (hint:submit_notify+0x0/0x5c [i915])
Jul 31 16:52:56 lucas-laptop kernel: Asynchronous wait on fence i915:clflush:0 timed out (hint:intel_atomic_commit_ready+0x0/0x54 [i915])

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

The workaround I was referring to is adding the boot option i915.enable_psr = 0

It should be connected to the integrated intel GPU, I was never able to get the Nvidia one to function at all, but this is a laptop so I don't know for sure

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

Which approach did you follow? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
Disable the nvidia chip in BIOS or blacklist nouveau (ensure it's not loaded in the initramfs) to get those constant crashes out of the way; in doubt install the nvidia blob.

Re: [SOLVED] Temporarily freezing randomly?

Alright I figured it out, my graphics drivers were broken. I used this to deal with a seemingly unrelated (but apparently not totally unrelated) issue and it happened to fix this too. The fix was to make a file at

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

with the contents of

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
