[solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

Hi,

first off: I don't have a problem to solve, just would like to know and understand something better.
I have two Arch Linux boxes, both with X, SDDM and Plasma.

I use konsole for terminal emulation when running a plasma session a lot. Now I realized that on one of the two, when I run 'who' it shows up every single konsole tab with a seperate PTS entry additionally to the TTY session that is plasma. I understand the difference between TTY and PTS. My question is: The PTS shows up in 'who' only on one of the two boxes. It does not show those on the other box.
As far as I can tell I never did any configuration on this on neither box. The Konsole settings are identical.
Can anyone tell me why there is a difference? Or what configuration controls that behavior?

Cheers,
Gerald

Re: [solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

What's the output of

It's the same on both machines:

$ type -a who
who is /usr/bin/who

Re: [solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

"who" checks /var/run/utmp - there're various ways to add entries there, done by TEs, shells, /usr/lib/utempter/utempter, … fuck knows.
I'd check permissions on /var/run/utmp and your users groups as well as maybe permissions (incl. the sticky bit) on /usr/lib/utempter/utempter - chances are one of your users can write into utmp, the other can't.

Edit: compare https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1781217 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1790452

Re: [solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

That somehow changed group to systemd-coredump.
Wonder when and how...

One of my two machines was installed just last week, the other one like 2 years ago. And the old one has the group changed on utempter.
Okay, learned something. Thanks!

Re: [solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

Did you read the 2nd thread and the linked bug?
Also: solved? Or is there still an open issue?

Re: [solved]Terminal emulator and PTS

Hi,

sorry I didn't respond for so long. And thank you very much!
I'm marking the topic solved. Actually I never perceived it as an issue. Just wanted to know why the two machines behave differently in this regard.
