[SOLVED] Currently working CD ripping software with MusicBrainz

Hi all!

Are you old fashioned and sometimes rip real CDs instead of just streaming from somewhere? Or are you some kind of Über-Hipster who listens to obscure CDs which can not be streamed from anywhere? Do you like to have your CDs ripped on your HD for convenience, possibly losslessly, with intact and as exact metadata as  possible - and with cover art for some eye candy?

I could answer "yes" to all of the questions above. I need MusicBrainz for good metadata quality (no other metadata service is good enough to be considered seriously); however I have hard time finding a ripping which can do all the stuff automatically (rip the d*n CDs and tag them).

I used to use abcde, but it just stopped working with musicbrainz. Seems like perl-musicbrainz-discid in AUR is just outdated.

Then I tried whipper. It fails, as it does not seem to be able to use cdparanoia in current Arch properly (fails at detecting drive specific offset or trying to rip any CD).

Now I could, of course, try to post issues to the said software / upstream, but is there anything that would work OOTB?

Any alternatrives I might have missed? What do you use for ripping your CDs?

Does anybody really care about intact metadata??? (I could rip the CDs with any ripper and tag manually with Picard - but in case I need to do batch ripping, which I am going to need to do - that is going to be a huge chore).

whipper works perfectly here. Also whipper does not use cdparanoia, but libcdio-paranoia, which is not the same thing smile

He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

track can't be ripped. Rip attempts number is equal to 'MAX_TRIES'

Often ripping a CD will just hang indefinitely, sometimes the above errors are produced.

Also, care to elaborate on the cdparanoia<->libcdio-paranoia difference? According to github issues, it definitely uses cdpranoia!

There are a lot of issues in Github, IIRC I also saw something about inability to rip, but I didn't want to investigate further. Are you using whipper-git from AUR by any change? The above errors are produced with the version from community.

However, I started using ripright for the time being. It is not optimal, as (IIRC) I can not configure it to do everything I wanted it to do. I don't remember the details anymore...

Bottom line: I'd like to find something which works, is well maintained and can use musicbrainz. Seems like ripright is the best alternative at the moment.

Re: [SOLVED] Currently working CD ripping software with MusicBrainz

I use asunder for ripping to flac and then picard (musicbrainz own tagger) to tag and rename.
This is of course a two step operation but it gives me a chance to correct weird/wrong tags before moving into media collection.

Re: [SOLVED] Currently working CD ripping software with MusicBrainz

The only reason i keep a WinXP VM with EAC on it is to rip CDs when i have something obscure and want to get it to a proper digital format. Found nothing acceptable on linux.

Re: [SOLVED] Currently working CD ripping software with MusicBrainz

Ok, got abcde working again.

The problem with musicbrainz-discid was down to aurutils not picking up upgraded perl (I thought there is something odd going on, and investigated that path furher), and hence not rebuilding musicbrainz-discid.

So back to using abcde again, marking as [SOLVED]. Thanks for the suggested alternatives, however!
