GRUB boot menu not showing up

Hello,

after trying to make the GRUB menu more beautiful, I no longer get the GRUB selection menu at the start up.
I tried to reverse all the change I made, but the menu wont show up.

After switching to a Win10 dual boot setup, a reinstallation of the GRUB was done.

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=Arch-Linux-grub
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Here is the  /etc/default/grub:

# GRUB boot loader configuration

GRUB_DEFAULT="0"
GRUB_TIMEOUT="3"
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Arch"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Preload both GPT and MBR modules so that they are not missed
GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"

# Uncomment to enable booting from LUKS encrypted devices
#GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK="y"

# Uncomment to enable Hidden Menu, and optionally hide the timeout count
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT="5"
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET="true"

# Uncomment to use basic console
GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT="console"

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal
#GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="console"

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
GRUB_GFXMODE="auto"

# Uncomment to allow the kernel use the same resolution used by grub
#GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="keep"

# Uncomment if you want GRUB to pass to the Linux kernel the old parameter
# format "root=/dev/xxx" instead of "root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxx"
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID="true"

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
#GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"

# Uncomment and set to the desired menu colors. Used by normal and wallpaper
# modes only. Entries specified as foreground/background.
#export GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL="light-blue/black"
#export GRUB_COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="light-cyan/blue"

# Uncomment one of them for the gfx desired, a image background or a gfxtheme
#GRUB_BACKGROUND="/path/to/wallpaper"

# Uncomment to get a beep at GRUB start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"

# Uncomment to make GRUB remember the last selection. This requires to
# set 'GRUB_DEFAULT=saved' above.
#GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"

#GRUB_FORCE_HIDDEN_MENU="true"
#GRUB_THEME="/boot/grub/themes/Vimix/theme.txt"

Edit: making the GRUB screen more beautiful means, installing a theme like this:

 grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

as shown in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … ation_file

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

Thanks for the reply. There went something wrong when copying the code... of course I regenerated the grub.cfg via the command:

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

In that case, I would recommend checking that Grub shows up in the bios assuming there are no issues when installing/configuring grub.

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by "checking that GRUB shows up in the bios"?

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

I mean going into the bios which is usually done by pressing the correct button early during the boot process. This means pressing the correct key, most of the time F2, F12 or Del, after powering on the computer and then navigating to the Boot section to verify the boot order is correct.

Hopefully, this is more clear smile

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

I never noticed that GRUB has it's own boot entry ... LOL. yikes

When booting into GRUB, I receive the following error message:

symbol 'grub_file_filters' not found.

GRUB then enters the rescue mode.

EDIT: I installed GRUB in /boot, but this is not the partition with the boot-flag and esp-flag. Do I need to install GRUB on the partition where the flags are set?

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

I believe the bootloader should be on an EFI system partition. To see a list of the partitions on your machine you can use

sudo fdisk -l

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

I installed the GRUB on sda1 .... still no boot menu.
fdisk -l output:

Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sda1       2048   1128447   1126400   550M EFI System
/dev/sda2    1128448 164970495 163842048  78.1G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda3  164970496 289173503 124203008  59.2G Linux filesystem
/dev/sda4  289173504 289206271     32768    16M Microsoft reserved
/dev/sda5  289206272 499093503 209887232 100.1G Microsoft basic

What I did:

mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=GRUB
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

What you did seems right to me.
Do I understand it right that you went from no grub to a grub emergency shell back to no grub? If so, I would verify in the bios that grub is selected as default boot entry.

What does your machine actually do when you boot it up? Does it boot straight to Arch or Windows or nothing?

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

It boots straight up into Arch Linux or Windows, depending on the boot priority I chose in the BIOS.
BUT I cant boot into the GRUB menu. It wont show up...

Again, the problems started when I tried to change the background wallpaper (and color of the selection bar) of the boot menu itself.
I think I reversed all the changes I made, but there might be something left (that does not get replaced when doing a reinstallation of Arch?!?!)

Re: GRUB boot menu not showing up

Hm, I don‘t know enough about the Windows bootloader and your BIOS to really help you diagnose the issue further.

To me this sounds like you are booting your kernel directly (EFISTUB) or using a different bootloader like systemd-boot but I don‘t have any experience with them. Also, maybe Windows broke something regarding the bootloader.

I would try to get rid of the Windows and Arch boot entry and then install grub fresh. Maybe you could achieve this by resetting your BIOS settings and then reinstalling GRUB from scratch.

The good thing in my opinion is that this seems like a mere misconfiguration.
