MAME and related resources

Hello everybody, I know MAME since his birth, played with it many and many times on Windows and now on Linux, but I never get into it the full way.
I mean, the way I did always was: download mame, put roms (and bios) into "roms" folder, play.

But there are many and many other resources around MAME, and now I want to make a good MAME machine
I can't understand where to put some resources and if they are needed.

Example:
I can find "Snaps" full set version 0.205, then update it to latest version, and put all files into "snap" folder...
I can find "Artworks" full set 0.202, then update it to latest version, and put all files into "artwork" folder...
The same with Flyers, PCBs, etc...

But what about DATs files??
Are they needed??
And what about XMLs files within??

What is the correct files and folders structure of a good MAME machine?
