Why are US and America considered separate regions when you're configuring your location/timezone? Is there a difference? Is one better than the other?
(The America directory has a bunch of city names(i.e Chicago) for locations whereas the US directory has the actual name of the timezone(i.e Central)

US/* have been deprecated in favour of the America/* zones. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_t … time_zones

I am not proud that people in my country often claim that the name of two large continents as synonymous with just our country. Brazilians are Americans, they're South American; Mexicans are Americans, they're Central Americans; Canadians are Americans, they're Americans with health care.
Look at the cities under /usr/share/zoneinfo/America, they are not all in the USA. In fact only 35/166 (21%) of them are in the USA, 30 are in Canada, 19 Argentina, 16 Brazil, etc.

Sorry, I only recognize a few of the cities, like Anchorage, and then automatically assumed it was America, and then assumed that most of the cities were just American cities I've never heard of. Not sure why I did that. Americans are American-centric. Sorry!

As an Alaskan, I assure you that many other Alaskans do not recognize an association with that country that lies Down South. Nor do we recognize Anchorage as part of Alaska, though some folks would say it's only about an hour or so away. ![]()

Antarctica? Nothing else but ocean if you just go south.

"Down South" references are equivalent to "Down in America," another phrase uttered by Alaskans. We tend to have more in common with our Canadian neighbors than the closest 'American' port at Bellingham, WA, a 3-day, 1,700-mile voyage down from the tip of Southeast Alaska. We Alaskans tend to think of Alaska as being our own, separate nation. Come visit some time and see if you don't agree. I'll buy the first beer and/or tacos (yes, we have Mexicans immigrants in Alaska).

Ironically, I'll be there this month
Probably going to have to take a rain-check on the libations though.
