I've been having an issue for a few months which required me to use nouveau for graphics. The problems started after a pacman -Syu update when the graphics and desktop weren't working right so I rebooted. Once it was back up I couldn't get SDDM to display on the monitor. I ended up installing the driver from the geforce website and it worked for a while, then broke again. Nouveau would work fine in graphical mode, but when installed the Nvidia driver would just act like the DisplayPort monitor wasn't there and require a reboot. I put off reinstalling from scratch for a while, but due to nouveau's nonexistent games performance I wanted to fix it. I installed from scratch and had the same problem: no signal to monitor when graphical mode was started with SDDM or xinit/startx. One thing I noted was the when using startx the Xorg process would hit 100% on one core and stay there, while the screen was still blank. I couldn't kill Xorg until I unplugged the monitor, but then when killed I still couldn't get display and had to reboot. Now here comes the strange part. I can start SDDM with HDMI connected, but I'm limited to 4k30, and I just figured out that I could get the DisplayPort to the monitor working by switching to said input on the monitor, then using the screen switcher in kde `meta+P`. I now have a working DisplayPort connection to my monitor, but have not yet tested if it'll just work now, or if I'll continue to have to swap from HDMI to DisplayPort.

If you are actually asking a question (I don't see one in that wall of text), you'll need to include some relevant information. Like what your graphics card is/are, actual versions of your drivers, journal entires and xorg.log.

Sorry. I was mostly just trying to get the details out. I have a GTX 980ti connected with DisplayPort to a 4K monitor and running the latest nvidia drivers from pacman. Despite the software seemingly going haywire it doesn't show up in logs. My question is, is there anyone else that has had a similar issue where DisplayPort works in console mode, in graphical mode under nouveau, but doesn't work at all launching graphical mode under the nvidia drivers?
I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to just let my computer boot into graphical mode without being heavily involved.

Please post the journal for a boot using the nvidia package from the arch repositories
along with the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*.conf + /etc/X11/xorg.conf used for that boot if present
and the matching Xorg.n.log from ~/.local/share/xorg/ or /var/log/ even if the files requested do not show anything you believe is relevant.

Here's a kernel log for last boot when it had issues. The xorg.conf was empty.

DELL P2715Q (DFP-1): 600.0 MHz maximum pixel clock3840x2160@60Hz is at 712.75 MHz, reduced blanking will get it to supported 533.00 MHz
=> Add a modeline w/ reduced blanking, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xr … esolutions
If there's any other issue w/ swapping outputs or KDE or whatnot, please express that as a structured thought - not as a messy braindump.

I've tried this now and realized that there seems to be a more fundamental issue. The problem happens at boot with DisplayPort. There is no video just booting to the TTY. The monitor stops outputting and goes to sleep as soon as the kernel loads.
What system would control this video mode in console?

This issue was fixed in the latest release of the Nvidia driver. I had submitted a bug report and it's working correctly now.
