Black screen on lid open

Lenovo T495, kernel 5.2.5

This happens every time I open the laptop lid after closing it, running Arch Linux.
A split second after opening it, the screen goes from unpowered to having some backlight it seems, but with no content / displaying black.
ctrl+alt+F2 does not work, or any other keys. Thus I always have to force-power-off it with the power key.
Here is the last output from `journalctl -b -1`,  from closing the lid to opening it to forcing the laptop to turn off. I obviously closed it at 16:56 and opened it at 19:36.

Re: Black screen on lid open

I have a hunch it's memory. Perhaps run MemTest including CPU cache.

Re: Black screen on lid open

You mean Memtest86+ or something else?

Re: Black screen on lid open

Linux 5.2.8

HP Pavilion 15-cw1507sa AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Vega 8

The problems Ploppz has described and experiencing are exactly the same for me

system sleeps and then sometime later ( could be minutes or hours ) I wake the laptop up and I can see the display turn on but it's a blank ( black ) screen, CTRL+ALT+F2, pressing the power button and nothing. I have to hold power putton to turn off then turn back on to able to continue using laptop

I'll do a memtest and get back to this thread later

Re: Black screen on lid open

I ran Memtest86 ( free edition ) for 4 hours 45 minutes for 2 passes, no errors

I ran Memtest86+ ( 5.01 ) for 6 hours 10 minutes for 1 pass, no errors

Considering I just bought this laptop 2 weeks ago which came with 8gb ram and I later upgraded that to 32gb and was happening with the 8gb and later 32gb I doubted it was anything todo with memory or cpu cache

I've been searching around and found other people ( outside of arch linux forums ) with same kind of output from dmesg and even same pci address

AMD Ryzen 3 2300U
AMD Ryzen 5 2500U
AMD Ryzen 5 2700U
AMD Ryzen 5 3500U
AMD Ryzen 5 3700U

These are only some of the models I remember. Some have the PRO model and some don't but there we more and they are on HP, Lenovo, Dell, Asus

They all have vega graphics and they use dcn 1.0, I think it's a bug with firmware or driver

I tried disabling display core via kernel parameter ( amdgpu.dc=0 ) but nothing was updating on my screen after the HP logo was showing, looked at the logs and saw no errors ( ??? )

Re: Black screen on lid open

Thank you very much for your report sinatosk!
I am in a situation where I have very little time at the moment, so as I didn't get memtest to work immediately, I did not pursue that any further. But for now I will assume it is not a problem with memory, as your memtest86+ session did not find anything. Also, my laptop is new (2 weeks); it would be strange if there was already a problem with memory?

My CPU is: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U w/ Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx

In case it's helpful, some RAM information:

$ sudo dmidecode --type 17

Re: Black screen on lid open

I also just recently bought a Lenovo T495s with an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U and experiencing the same issue. One thing I've noticed is that it seems to almost always trigger if the system was hibernating before suspending as opposed to suspending after a cold boot. Not sure if it's related, it might be a red herring.

I guess it might be related to the CPU or GPU since other Ryzen APU owners also have this issue. Any ideas to debug this further?

Re: Black screen on lid open

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm stuck

My guess is it's somethig to do with power management, timings and something going out of sync ( driver or firmware, could be both )

I've enabled tlp and I've had to disable power managment for "04:00.4" because of linux PM was unable to suspend that for some reason

I'm glad you got hibernation working.... unless I'm doing something wrong, I've never been able to get hibernation working on linux on any platform... only suspension

Re: Black screen on lid open

I didn't have to do anything special to get hibernation working on this laptop, I just followed the instructions on the wiki page and as far as I can tell it's working correctly. It's just suspension that's flakey.

Re: Black screen on lid open

ok from the kernel parameters I removed "quiet" and added "no_console_suspend"

after suspend/resume a few times it eventually failed and this is what I'm seeing and the last 2 lines I'm also seeing when trying to hibernate

Re: Black screen on lid open

I briefly played around with some kernel parameters but I've been able to trigger it still.
It seems there's several bugs involving Vega graphics on freedesktop.org, this one might be related.
The original reporter mentions Kernel 5.1.16 to work fine but I have yet to try it. In any case I think this is probably GPU related, I also get some funny looking amdgpu messages in dmesg.

I fixed the hibernation issue and now working. I had to set the "HibernateMode" to "shutdown" as "platform" wasn't working

I also set kernel parameter "iommu=pt" and "amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1" based on some of the stuff I've read in the link you provided and I've repeated the hibernation over and over and thats working... however suspension is the same problem just like your

Re: Black screen on lid open

Good news everyone,

I think I might have identified the culprit. Setting amd_iommu=off as a kernel parameter fixed suspension 100% in a test run of 20 or so suspensions in a row!
One thing I noticed about the broken suspensions earlier though is that for me the system hangs before it's fully suspended, rather than failing to resume again. I noticed that because the red LED on the ThinkPad logo wasn't fading in and out like it usually does when it's suspended, rather it was static like in normal use.

Anyways, let me know if this works for you too, in which case a bug should probably be filed to the kernel devs to inform them something is broken with AMD's IOMMU driver.

my god I've never seen a device suspend so fast

soon as I press enter*BANG*, I'm like "O.o - shit laptop dead"

anyway...

Yes it's suspending and resuming (thanks adim) for me but I'm still seeing this in the kernel dmesg everytime I suspend and later wake up

while I did mentioned earlier hibernation works for me now however it doesn't always work ( before and after 'amd_iommu=off' ). I'm seeing this when hibernating and later resume hibernation. Sometimes it's continues after hibernation, then another time it's a blank screen, then another time things seem to be ok but then there is high cpu usage and eventually system becomes unresponsive.

I found suspension and hibernation is more successful from Xorg than from a tty ( this is before 'amd_iommu=off' )

I'll continue to suspend with 'amd_iommu=off' and let you know more. I've only just set this kernel parameter 30 minutes ago

Thanks

Does this actually affect system stability or performance? If not then I guess we could just mark it up as "random noise".

This might be a different bug, especially since you mentioned earlier that your hw requires some quirks to get hibernation working in the first place.

I was also testing amd_iommu=fullflush and whilst it did make the issue a bit more rare I still encountered it, seems like turning it off is the only fix.

While it doesn't seem to be affecting stability or performance, seeing kernel stack errors I don't take lightly and/or as random noise

although this morning I resume my laptop and I see the message again but at the end it says

[  +0.001562][drm] pstate took longer than expected ~176us

which sounds like it tried again numerous times ( probably why I see the errors is repeated in dmesg ) and eventually succeeded so I think it kinda confirms it's some sort of timing issue on this error message

As embarassing as it sounds... this hibernation ( unlike other laptops/desktops ) I simply forgot to mount the swap partition. When I started debugging the suspend/resume, I saw a message saying it was unable to find the resume device, thats when I noticed I forgot to mount it.

The specific thing I had to do is set "HibernateMode" in file "/etc/systemd/sleep.conf" to "shutdown" as it was not powering off upon completetion of hibernation, have to press the power button to resume it ( I'm fine with that as I prefer that, BIOS/UEFI doesn't provide an option to disable wake on lip open )

Since setting "amd_iommu=off" suspension seems to be working fine so far but I do need that iommu issue fixed as I intend to make use of that

thanks adim

Re: Black screen on lid open

I have this same issue, but having 'amd_iommu=off' or 'quiet amd_iommu=off' as my only kernel parameters do not fix suspend. Am I applying it incorrectly or do you have any suggestions?

Re: Black screen on lid open

Welp, seems like this is still occuring for me also. This time however the graphical session did resume but it was frozen, was able to switch to a VT and find this:

[drm] Fence fallback timer expired on ring sdma0
amdgpu 0000:05:00.0: [drm:amdgpu_ib_ring_tests [amdgpu]] *ERROR* IB test failed on gfx (-110).
[drm:amdgpu_device_ip_late_init_func_handler [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ib ring test failed (-110).

Killing my window manager and restarting it caused it to be extremely choppy so I had to reboot. I've been seeing similar errors to the one above other times too.
There's a bunch of Vega graphics related crashes/lockups on bugs.freedesktop.org which are relatively recent with no real progress being made.

Notable ones:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111244
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110886
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=111122

Some others could be related too, guess we'll have to help out over there to try and get this fixed.

I will do soon. I'll neaten things up first based on what I've done here and post it there.

Hopefully we get something sorted. I'm still using "amd_iommu=off" with still being able to wake up although last night I tried shutting down my laptop ( after resume ) and it just sat their, blinking cursor on top left corner, don't know why yet

Re: Black screen on lid open

As pointed out in some other places it seems like downgrading to Kernel 5.1.16 does indeed fix this issue.
suspend/resume works reliably even without any custom kernel parameters (no messing with the iommu required).

Similar thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=247761

Some reports on freedesktop also point this out and they've already bisected it, however the offending commit is fairly innocent so it probably just happens to trigger an issue elsewhere...

PS:
If you don't happen to have that kernel in your pacman cache (as did I since it was a fresh install) then look at https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/ to grab the corresponding kernel and kernel headers.

Thanks

I'm using Linux 5.2.9 now and still suspend/resume with no issues yet with amd iommu off still. Hopefully iommu and other issues fixed soon so I can enable amd iommu again

I usually suspend/resume 1-2 times a day

Re: Black screen on lid open

Thanks adim! For me, kernel 5.1.16 fixed the issue, whereas amd_iommu=off did not.
I guess I will follow issue 111244 as linked to earlier to know when I can upgrade the kernel again.
