Did you try to change the themes yet in Gimp? The system theme might be relevant as well if Gimp theme is set to 'system theme'.

Yes, but you have to switch to these themes properly in Gimp 'Options'. Go there and try several themes to see if it changes something. There should be several others as well (legacy themes, etc..).

I think I know what OP is talking about: one of the recent updates to GIMP (I'm not a heavy GIMP user so it could have been a couple of updates ago) changed the "default" theme to be a dark theme, which makes the white-on-white dropdown boxes hard to read. I'm on KDE, it may be rendered differently on Gnome.

Anyway: changing the GIMP Theme to "System - /usr/share/gimp/2.0/themes/System" put everything back to what it was before for me.
