refresh status of display-connections

Hello,

before changing the active display to my TV, using openbox-menu and xrandr, i ask about the state of connection of the display. So if,for example, the TV is switched off or the cable is not connected, it wont turn my desktop display off, but show an error message instead.
I do this, by reading this file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-HDMI-A-1/status

The problem is, sometimes after i turned the TV off, the status-file still says "connected".

What could be a lightweight command, to refresh those files?
