Sorry for this question going nowhere.
Running pure arch, from the arch installation iso.
After trying, and then removing kde and gnome, i'm getting unexpected info from pacman.
# pacman -Dkk
error: missing 'wine' dependency for 'playonlinux'
error: missing 'wine' dependency for 'wine-mono'
error: missing 'wine' dependency for 'winetricks'It’s odd that pacman reports that playonlinux needs wine, but then says playonlinux wasn’t found.
# pacman -Qi playonlinux
error: package 'playonlinux' was not foundHow can i determine which package needs these deps?
pacman reports no orphans:
# pacman -QtdqI don't know if kde or gnome have anything to do with this, just looking for clues.
Sorry for being stupid, feel free to delete this question or move to purgatory.

wine is in multilib which that system has not enabled. playonlinux, wine-mono and wine-tricks are all in community.
pacman has detected those three packages contain a dependency it can not fulfill.
If you wanted to use wine you would enable the multilib repository, wine would then be available and the dependency would be fulfilled.

thx for reply, @loqs.
i don't want to use wine. I never installed it.
i think you're saying that this info is correct, and not a problem? So, pacman will report missing deps for every package in multilib, including packages that were never installed?
Btw, when you say "in community", do you mean AUR?
thx, sorry for TGN.

It will only report the issues for packages in repositories your system has enabled that reference packages not in any of those repositories.
The official repositories enabled by the shipped pacman.conf are core, extra and community.

ok, thx.
i don't understand the logic why pacman reports deps missing for packages which aren't actually installed.
i also don't understand what it means for a package to be "enabled"-- so that's different than "installed"?
Sorry, i'm stupid.
Feel free to delete this stupid question.

`pacman -Dkk` -D is operating on the pacman database. The database for a repository contains every package in that repository.
pacman -Dkk checks the dependencies for every package listed in every enabled repository.
An enabled repository is one listed in pacman.conf that is not commented out.
Edit:
If pacman only new about what was installed on your system it would not be able to install new packages as it would have no information on them.

Because you aren't asking pacman to only check packages that are installed -- you're asking pacman to check the sync package databases.
DATABASE OPTIONS (APPLY TO -D) [...] -k, --check Check the local package database is internally consistent. This will check all required files are present and that installed packages have the required dependencies, do not conflict and that multiple packages do not own the same file. Specifying this option twice will perform a check on the sync databases to ensure all specified dependencies are available.
Use only one -k if you want to check local database. And if you want to check local package integrity, use -Qkk.
QUERY OPTIONS (APPLY TO -Q) [...] -k, --check Check that all files owned by the given package(s) are present on the system. If packages are not specified or filter flags are not provided, check all installed packages. Specifying this option twice will perform more detailed file checking (including permissions, file sizes, and modification times) for packages that contain the needed mtree file.

Thx, that helps.
Is there a pacman command to show missing deps just for installed packages?
i'm confused since man pacman says:
-D, --database
Operate on the package database. This operation allows you to modify certain
attributes of the installed packages
and
-k, --check
Check that all files owned by the given package(s) are present on the system. If
packages are not specified or filter flags are not provided, check all installed
packages.
sorry for being stupid.

You missed you passed the option twice

all specified dependencies are available.Last edited by loqs (2019-08-18 19:04:34)

Do they mean, available on my system? Or available in the database?
wish i wasn't so stupid

sync database is the database for the repository. local database is the database for what is installed on your system.

Ok, i get it now.
"-Dkk" means "check for deps missing from the repo."
"-Dk" means "check for deps missing from locally-installed packages."
Dumb people like me need dumbed-down explanations.
