I can't figure out how to change my default keyboard layout to a custom layout(a .map) in xorg(awesome WM, but awesome doesn't exactly provide tools for you. This article on the wiki tells you how to set keyboard layout in Xorg, but only for a predefined list of default layouts. I've already changed the keyboard layout in the console by editing vconsole.conf to include my custom keymap, which is working perfectly in the console, but this did not carry over to the window manager. I didn't really find anything helpful from the awesome website, either, and I don't think editing rc.lua will help with anything, but maybe I'm wrong about that. Is there a solution to this, or should I just go try out another window manager?
Thanks!
Edit: fixed link

Have you tried pointing setxkbmap at your map using -keymap?

A long time ago (in a far galaxy...) I made my own symbol map.
Maybe you are searching for something like this?

And I have a setxkbmap command in .xinitrc

Yes, I have, but I tried again just to be sure. It just returns "Error loading new keyboard description".

That might be what I'm looking for... I'll start experimenting with that and see what happens. Gonna mark this solved for now...

Sorry, I don't know how the link has been trunk. I didn't see the mistake.
