It has been ~15 days since firefox and waterfox began showing a strange issue.
Sometimes the page freezes : I'm unable to edit the url, navigate the page or
click things.
This also happens when i'm using a fire/waterfox window like "View the page information".
Often the only way to unblock the browser is to move the cursor over its task in the taskbar (tint2).
I noticed few things :
- others applications doesn't seem to be affected by this problem
- xf86-video-intel was updated on march, so I don't think it's something video-related
- it doesn't happen when using the lts kernel
- `strace -tt -T firerfox` showed a lot of :
recvmsg(4, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (resource temporarily unavailable)
and
futex(0x..., FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1
What should I do to further investigate?
Edit :
The problem persists even after upgrading to :
- linux 5.2.3
- xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+865+g60022507-1
- firefox 68.0.1
and even after deleting places.sql from (water/fire)fox profile dir
Edit :
Running the browsers when tint2 is not running seems to solve the problem (well, it becames a tint2 problem)

@nachopro, do you use tint2? Can you see if this works for you too?

I have a similar issue, but I doubt that firefox is to blame. The issue started after an update on 18 July - it had been 6 weeks since my previous update, and that was a big one:

Both the default and the zen kernels were updated from 5.1 to 5.2. Subsequent updates until today's 5.2.3 have not solved the issue. I can work perfectly with with linux-lts.
I doubt that firefox is to blame, as I just had the issue on my previous boot using epiphany (and trying to post an answer to this thread).
I also tried switching between Wayland and Xorg, but had crashes under both.
I'm using stock Gnome 3.32 on a 64-bit regularly updated Arch, not using tint or tint2. My laptop is a Dell XPS 9350 with Intel graphics.
I'm going to have a look at the journal - last time I checked, it didn't contain anything useful, but now I do see some errors just before I had to hard reset:

Googling for the last gnome-session-binary error, I come across this thread, pointing at gtk3 (which was also updated: (1:3.24.8-1 -> 1:3.24.10-1)): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=245097
My laptop has a HiDPI screen, so maybe this is a related issue. I'll Google some more and post back.

Have you tried the workaround from https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63159 to see if that is the cause?

Those symptoms seem very similar - I have now booted into the default Arch kernel with the i915 kernel option as instructed. So far, so good...
Thank you! I'll report back tomorrow with my experience.

I experience the same issue. I noticed that same problem not only in Firefox, but Thunderbird and telegram-desktop.
It hangs sporadically, and unfreezes momentarily when I hover mouse over another application in tint2; or when I switch to another application with Alt+Tab.
This might have to do with hardware, because I have another laptop with exact same environment (i.e. openbox+tint2) and application don't freeze there.
And yes, it started around couple of weeks ago, maybe it has to do with kernel 5.1 -> 5.2 upgrade.
Edit: trying out this i915.enable_psr=0 workaround - so far so good. Thanks, loqs!
Edit2: nope, still freezes...

You could try linux-mainline from AUR or bisecting between linux 5.1 and 5.2 to find the causal commit then report it upstream.

I should try that.
However, after I had switched to nvidia (previously I used intel/bumblebee/intel-virtual-output/optirun configuration), the problem seems to have gone.
Does it give us any hints?

Maybe, if you used that combination it's likely you used xf86-video-intel, what happens if you remove that and rely on the modesetting driver instead? (You won't be able to use intel-virtual-output, but apart from that you should get a xorg up on the intel card utilising the modesetting driver which often has fewer/different issues than xf86-video-intel)

Unfortunately it didn't work for me, it still freezes randomly.
In few days I'll try to bisect between linux 5.1 and 5.2 as you suggested.
Thanks everyone for your help

You are right, I used xf86-video-intel.
I didn't use modesetting exactly because it's missing intel-virtual-output (which modesetting+nouveau configuration could fix, but then I'd be missing proper 3D acceleration).
I'd better invest time in bisecting 5.1 vs 5.2 than trying out modesetting which is pretty much useless for me. Thanks for suggestion anyway!

Well what I'm trying to rule out whether this regression is only happening on xf86-video-intel, which might add another datapoint to the potential bug report.

Reporting back in that I didn't encounter a single crash since I enabled the kernel parameter i915.enable_psr=0
I can also confirm that I have the package xf86-video-intel installed, which probably means that I'm not using the modesetting driver.

FYI: The bug report links to a patch that should be included in the 5.2.8 kernel by the kernel devs.

I have upgraded to linux 5.2.8 and then 5.2.9 but the problem persists. Now it's a bit different : sometimes moving the mouse over the icon isn't enough; I have to minimize and maximize again to regain control of the page.
Has the patch been merged?
Am I the only one experiencing this problem?
It would still be useful to bisect between linux 5.1 and 5.2, as suggested some time ago?

The fix for the psr issue was merged with 5.2.8. I'd still generally suggest that you should try and use the modesetting driver if you have no reason to rely on xf86-video-intel.
But yes if you still encounter the issue you will want to bisect.

I couldn't make modesetting driver work, but I've solved the problem following wiki instructions on Intel tearing

I can confirm I have been facing the same issue (also using xf86-video-intel). I'm using i3 and both chrome and firefox have random freezes every now and then. The freeze goes away after a few seconds or if I toggle the fullscreen mode. It only happens with the laptop screen, setting an external monitor and duplicating the contents leads to freezes ONLY on the laptop and not on the external monitor.
Setting `i915.enable_psr=0` does not solve the issue for me.

I have exactly the same problem.
Setting "TearFree" can solve this issue.

I'm not sure if it is the same issue or a different one, but Firefox for suffers from significant input delay periodically. It seems to freeze while scrolling, or while typing something into the form.
This does not seem to be a Firefox specific issue though because this issue also seems to occur in a few other applications like Speedcrunch, DraftSight etc. The surprising thing here is that it happens only on one of the user accounts on my system. The other user account works perfectly fine.
For firefox, I also tried deleting the local profile, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Unable to figure out how to solve for this.

The original problem was solved, please open up a new thread with new problems and post more information about your general system.
