I'm not sure what relevant info to include here. I manually installed the bitmap font GohuFont by downloading the font itself and loading it with fc-cache and all that and it worked. A month or so ago after an update openbox and rofi stopped working properly with it and other bitmap fonts I've tried. The fonts themselves still work in the terminal and in firefox so nothing seems to have changed with them. I've also swapped 70-no-bitmaps.conf for 70-yes-bitmaps.conf in /etc/fonts/conf.d. I'm really not sure what update would have broken this.

It seems like this problem came about because pango dropped bitmap support. Does anyone know a workaround to this?

Downgrading to pango 1.43 fixed the issue.

Correction, it temporarily fixed the issue. Partial upgrades are unsupported and will eventually break your system.
Why not just install and use the TTF version of the font?

I'll give that a shot next chance I get and report back.

If there is no ttf or otb version of the font, then you can try to convert it yourself with fontforge or fonttosfnt.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but the ttf font isn't working at all.

I've gotten the font "working" in certain contexts but the spacing is different from the standard font and it's nowhere near as good.

"spacing" or "hinting"?

The individual characters look fine but they have some extra space between them with the ttf font.

That's meaningless. Does altering the hinting mode have impact on this effect? (If it has no impact at all, you're not effectively altering the hinting, ensure to read the hinting section in the linked wiki)
