Only with xfce install does this happen. Gnome and the rest work.

Are you on Manjaro perhaps?
I possess a device, in my pocket, that is capable of accessing the entirety of information known to man.
I use it to look at funny pictures of cats and to argue with strangers.

No. Arch

Ok, found the same question on different boards the past 12 hours but stating manjaro. Same username, so I was just curious.

Its a long and winding road to get here. I posted here when my Arch failed as stated above. Then noticed my debian installs do not fail. Hench my search and installs of other arch derivatives, all with the same result.
I suspect somewhere like "xfce4-display-settings" , which needs xorg in order to display current resolution. "/etc/X11" doesn't have anything inside to remotely reference xorg. Years ago it did.
I need to find a way using the terminal to determine how the resolution determined.

Solution: "Ctrl+Alt+Backspace"
Actually the above is not a solution, but a way to get a login prompt. Sometimes It didn't respond. What did finally work, was remove the Display Manager and instead use "getty" for login:

Something about DM and my hardware and Arch.
