I've set up my Archlinux with Xorg, gdm and Budgie Desktop and noticed that my lock screen is not working, I tried to use shortcut for it (checked if it is binded in settings), via applet and finally I used dconf-editor to check if lock screen is somehow disabled but everything seems fine, I tried to search about simillar issues, but the only thing I found was about not working lock screen on GNOME and somebody told to use that dconf-editor, but sadly as I said it didn't work. This is my output of systemctl status gdm:

I also installed budgie-desktop and gnome group together and my first boot was to GNOME, because I forgot to change it in gdm so it could mess something I guess.

On my system locker in budgie gui/menu also don't work, but I don't remember it ever worked. I doubt that you messed something; I have simplest Xorg setup by .xinitrc file (so startx/xinit some_desktop) and locker don't work.
As a workaround you can start any locker you want through terminal or as you would start any application (alt+f2 shortcut?).

Ugh, at least the good news is that finally something is not my fault, but as you said I need to find an equivalent, thank you very much!

Alternative screen lockers (packages names):
i3lock
i3lock-color
slock
xscreensaver
xautolock
xlockmore
kscreenlocker
I prefer simple i3lock, because it don't print errors in log files and I wanted just black screen (default is white; can be set to any colour). I created new text excuteble file in /usr/bin/xlock with content "i3lock -c 000000". So I run xlock with black screen. Press ESC if you mistake when entering password and start over.
xscreensaver has more options and animated backgrounds.
