Strange black smudge in the top left of the screen (Cinnamon)

I have this black/grey box in the top left of my screen:
https://0x0.st/z4f8.png
It disappears after rebooting, but it appears again after some time (not sure exactly what causes it). Any idea what this is?

Mod Edit - Replaced oversized image with link.
CoC - Pasting pictures and code

Re: Strange black smudge in the top left of the screen (Cinnamon)

Please replace the image w/ a link and/or thumbnail (forum rules allow 200x200px)

Does it appear on a screenshot?
Is this on X11?
If so, what's the ouput of "xwininfo" and "xprop" when you click into the area? (Please post that in "code" tags)

About the photo: why is there a person in the image? Wallpaper? Or was this taken w/ the webcam of the device??

The image was taken while watching a Youtube video because it was easier to see that way. There's no particular reason for there being a person.

Re: Strange black smudge in the top left of the screen (Cinnamon)

That's your desktop window. Since the image didn't show your desktop, the artifact is either an output-only window, in your compositor or the scanout buffer.

a) Does it appear on screenshots?
b) can you replace muffin w/ another WM (eg. openbx)? Does it show up there?

Re: Strange black smudge in the top left of the screen (Cinnamon)

What do you mean? The image linked is a screenshot, so yes it does appear in screenshots.
I don't know if using a different WM would fix the issue because if I restart cinnamon, the box disappears temporarily. I'll try switching and see if it comes back.

Re: Strange black smudge in the top left of the screen (Cinnamon)

Given the blurriness, I thought it rather was a photo of the screen?
How big is that area actually?

Edit: in pixels.
