Same here, Although dwm's graceful handling of windows that really need to be floating makes the Gimp more bearable.

You could also check out xv. It can do some basic photo manipulations but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.

In my opinion picture editor is not to make photo album and rotating pictures. Picture editor supposed to be for correcting pictures: moire, tilted horizon...and xv, qview and digikam too are not usebale. It is my opinion.

A real virtue with xv though is that it comes with a pretty exhaustive manual. You can learn how to use every aspect of it by reading the manual. It is really a very powerful if admittedly not immediately obvious tool.

For some reason, jacman looks great, as does azureus - it's just many others where things go awry.

Azureus uses SWT, rather than Java's default Swing UI toolkit. SWT actually uses native widgets (more-or-less) and with Linux it uses GTK.

Another good looking (pure Java) GUI is Aerith although it takes a fair bit to get the svn version compiling at the moment.

Wasn't Java 1.6 supposed to have some kind of gtk engines support or something? 1.5 had the gtk LnF, but that was kind of silly because nobody uses the default gtk engine anymore...

I seem to have lost touch with Java. I remember when I used to be right on top of this stuff!

That's right. Java has been resisting native rendering for some time. As I recally, JRE 5.0 did have some native rendering for windows (which was why the Windows LAF was only available on Windows!) but GTK was simply a "theme" via JDK5's generic Synth LAF. Fidelity was pretty poor to say the least. With Mustang, they are finally using gtk proper, but it's still limited, much more so than the Windows LAF, from what I can tell.

I saw an article written last year listing some of the improvements on the Java GTK LAF: http://www.ffnn.nl/pages/articles/java/ … review.php. I'm sure it's improved since then.

krita

Using alot of stuff from the gimp...... basically a gimp that has a user friendly interface..... it's is a nice application that has some nice features. Simple things like drawing lines with the gimp can seem counter-intuitive (until you do some reading).... krita gives you a button to draw a line.... stuff like that. Nice user interface.
