Re: Laptop resolution issue

You're now using the intel driver but it seriously looks like those knuckelheads have wired the internal display to the nvidia chip.
So you *have* to at least activate the nvidia chip to transmit the image… the best thing (to save energy) you can actually do is to deactivate the intel chip which exists for, I assume, "reasons"?

Unless this is double wired and you can control the behavior in the BIOS?

If not, this also nukes the idea that the output mapping causes the black screen.
W/ the nvidia blob, you should try to use a VGA console (eg. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … ramebuffer ) but w/ nouveau that's not the case either…

Lastly:

Regardless of that, we might have to discuss what you're actually trying to achive by reducing the resolution, because this is most likely an xy-problem.

Yep it is hard wired. And yes - probably there is no way to workaround nvidia and it has to be active.
Unfortunately no BIOS settings for that - which seems to be becoming normal nowadays (and it really sucks)

Disabling fb is something useful, cos installing nvidia blog greets me with black screen on boot, also it is possible to blindly login and startx...

And lastly:  As I mentioned I was able to reduce/change the resolution. However this requires switching between different ttys.
To make this clearer. I do change resolution. End up black screen. Open a new tty with eg Str+Alt+2. Then I go back to tty1
and the resolution changed. For that reason and from what I have seen from the Xorg logs I am not sure if its an xy-problem,
I assume it more an acpid issue. You can see the ideling with the systemd-logins.

I will report my further testings day3 inc

Re: Laptop resolution issue

An "xy-problem" means that you struggle with the resolution change but there's a reason why you seek to alter the resolution and maybe altering the resolution is not the proper/best way to deal with that underlying issue.

Re: Laptop resolution issue

In the end nothing worked. I tried any possible driver combination as well as different things like prime, optimus-manager etc.

In the end - for my setup and hardware architecture, using only xf86-intel drivers and nothing else work best.

Thanks for the support - I guess my laptop is somehow special. In case there is somebody else out there with an 17r5 and
a good setup/configuration I d glad to hear of.

Re: Laptop resolution issue

In the end you've not given us any information about what you are actually wanting to do. Why do you want to change the resolution? That's almost always the non-optimal approach on modern screens, yet alone it isn't clear whether it even would be an usable approach by any stretch, for whatever actual problem you are having.

Yeah - mainly I just wanted to change the resolution (and I thought I pretty clearly stated that in my initial post)

Hi all,
I am trying to change my display resolution,

And in that regards I also mentioned Id like to only use the intel card for some reasons.
However I admit that the discussion made some moves ....

And is changing the resolution just an academic exercise?
