ive tried to figure it out myself but its above my head, here is what i know:

-"rtkit" hasnt been updated since march so it cant be that package thats changed.
-rtkit depends on dbus , polkit , systemd , so i tried downgrading each of those in turn but the spam continues
-tried previous kernel (5.2.8) and that didnt help either
-seems to happen when i open firefox so i tried downgrading firefox (68.0.2) but that didnt change things either.
-rtkitctl --help doesnt provide much help either

would appreciate some help silencing this log spam as i cant find a way.

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

Don't look into silencing the spam, look into what triggers it, look up the programs behind mentioned PIDs. I've usually seen it simply triggered for pulseaudio, which should usually just happen once per session maybe something else is now utilizing it, or you have something configured that spawns a lot of processes.

Also "todays" update is meaningless to everyone but you, post the pacman.log containing information on what exactly was updated.

firefox is the culprate, checked the pids just now , as i said in my 1st post i tried downgrading firefox but that didnt help.

EDIT: ok its definatly firefox 69 thats causing the problem, previously when i downgraded to firefox 68 it had a moan about downgrading so i cleared "~/.mozilla" and "~./cache/mozilla" and tried again with a fresh "68.0.2-1" and just like magic no more log spam, so what has been changed in firefox 69 ?

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

I'm somewhat hard pressed to think of this as a problem, maybe a deliberate choice to increase/decrease priority of demanding/less demanding tasks, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1560720 looks like something in relation to this and audio threads of it's internal sound server has been enabled in moz 69 and the release notes though not explicitly mentioning linux does contain hints that similar functionality was enabled for Windows.

If you really just want to silence rtkit you might want to create a drop in for rtkit-daemon in order to redirect standard out

Actually it's firefox who does this. I have the same issue on my debian and I noticed the same messages after update firefox to v69.

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

yip its annoying, i tried creating a drop in for systemd to direct the output to a file rather than journal but it doesnt work, output is still to the journal and the custom log file is empty:

cat /etc/systemd/system/rtkit-daemon.service.d/override.conf
[Service]
StandardOutput=append:/var/log/rtkit/log

i know this method works because ive done it to pacserve which works fine:

cat /etc/systemd/system/pacserve.service.d/override.conf
[Unit]
After=syslog.target network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
StandardOutput=append:/var/log/pacserve/log

im all for logs, i like logs, but blatant spam annoys me so i like to keep it contained elsewhere

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

rtkit-daemon is using syslog directly see [1] [2] e.t.c. not stdout or stderr.

[2] https://github.com/heftig/rtkit/blob/ma … on.c#L1432

Edit:
You would need to disable all the syslog calls you do not want to reach the journal.

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

thanks for that info loqs , its a bit over my head i think, would i have to change each 'syslog' to 'stdout' and recompile rtkit ? sounds like an overkill fix to me, might just have to live with it

Looks like rtkit logs directly to the syslog thus you might want to set a higher loglevel

Edit: Whoops got ninja'd

cat /etc/systemd/system/rtkit-daemon.service.d/override.conf
[Service]
LogLevelMax=notice

that did the trick, thanks videl !

Re: [SOLVED] firefox 69 causing rtkit-daemon log spam after todays update

I don't think it's a good solution to hide the messages. For instance, now I get the following warnings:

rtkit-daemon[3714]: Warning: Reached maximum concurrent threads limit for user '1000', denying request.

This happens when I open many firefox tabs/profiles.

Also I noticed lockups:

rtkit-daemon[3812]: Recovering from system lockup, not allowing further RT threads

So allowing firefox to manipulate priorities isn't a good thing, and I don't think firefox should get -11 priority when most processes (and all user's ones) work with the default 20.

The question really should be: is there a way to prevent firefox from setting priorities for its processes? I don't really want to remove rtkit-daemon, but if there's no other way, I think I'm going to get rid of it.
