Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

As long as the windowmanager supports it, any WM can be used on XGL. At the moment only the windowmanager named Compiz supports XGL though - in other words, you have to replace the default windowmanager in your DE with compiz. That's why it doesn't work with openbox and stuff, as openbox IS the windowmanager. More WMs can (and probably will) be made to support XGL in the future though. They will also work on XGL without supporting it, you just won't get those nice effects.

Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

i see...
thank u for clearing things up! 8)

that said, it does mean that currently the best (or only) method to run it would be with one of the 3 big DE's (kde, gnome, xfce) ?

does one have any howto for each DE especially, or s.th. like that? big_smile  roll

Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

IIRC XGL is rather sluggish  if you don't use Compiz, but it will run with other WMs.

AIGLX I'm not really sure about. I do know it isn't easily available for Arch at the moment.

Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

I have aiglx working fine. All you need to do really is to compile xorg-server 1.1.0 and the necessary drivers. Make sure to compile xorg-server + drivers against (at least) mesa 6.5.

Of course, if you depend on proprietary drivers (ati or nvidia), you should wait, as these drivers allegedly are not compatible with the new xorg.

EDIT: btw, there's a patch required if you want to run compiz on aiglx. It's to be found somewhere on the forums. I personally hope for other window managers to make use of aiglx; particularly I'm looking forward to gnome 2.16 and kde4 smile

i tried exactly that. xorg-server and libgl-* built superb but then all drivers i've tried so far failed to compile against mesa 6.5. most notable examples are xf86-video-{i810,ati}. because of that i compile dthe drivers only with mesa 6.4.2 and it seems like it works.

Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

I have xf86-video-intel compiled against both mesa 6.5 and mesa-cvs. Try mesa-cvs, maybe you'll have better luck with that. I think you should definitely build the drivers against 6.5 or higher. At least the intel driver has a bunch of new features, IIRC.

Re: XGL (aixgl) ?

edit-- OK i've gotten it to compile by using quinn's cvs, but when it starts it says this:

$ dbus-launch compiz --replace
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31
compiz: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz: No managable screens found on display :0.0

any ideas?  i'm using mesa-xgl-cvs (the only one that would even let compiz compile), and most of the other compiz/xgl packages from the AUR here, and running xorg 7.1.  thx
