Keyboard issue prevents creation of Network interface in Synology NAS

I have successfully installed Archlinux in a Virtual Machine running on my NAS. I access the VM with the Terminal that Synology DSM provides. A network device exists, here is a transcript:

Output of ip link show:

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 …
2: ens3: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP>  mtu 1500 …

So to follow the instructions in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-networkd I set out to create a file 20-wired.network with content

[Match]
Name=ens3
[Network]
DHCP=ipv4

I cannot create this file since I cannot type the "[" character in nano on the VM. On my Macbook Air I do it this way:
Alt + ( = [

In the VM I have entered
#loadkeys /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/se-ir209.map.gz
which so far gives me the best match with characters I need, for example /, | and \. The problem here seems to be that the Alt key has no effect in Terminal on the VM.

Another obvious problem is that ordinary Copy/Paste commands have no effect, hence the lack of Terminal printouts in this post. Luckily copy by pen on paper still works :-)

Best,
/GA

This also reads more like you simply should configure your VM software properly so that the key goes through.

Ok, thank you for input. I will take this issue to the Synology Support center. I tried to set up the VM for use with Swedish keyboard, but may have overlooked some step.

Unfortunately Synology came back with something of a non-answer, see below. I find it hard to believe that if they can get the keyboard to work on all the stated distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, SuSe, and so on) they could not get it to work on ArchLinux. But that is the effect of their answer.

Re: Keyboard issue prevents creation of Network interface in Synology NAS

Here's a bunch of german users talking about the same problem. I kinda doubt they all use "unspported OS" …

I'd try configuring host and VM (the entire chain) for a "regular" US-QWERTY layout…

Thank you Seth for input! Before going the "fallback to US keyboard" route I want to call Synology's cards, that is create another VM with one of the supported distributions and check if the issue disappears. Or at least if their Technical support can provide a better answer.

Re: Keyboard issue prevents creation of Network interface in Synology NAS

If there is no way to fix it, the digraph option mentioned earlier is the actual proper way to work around this problem.

On the other hand sometimes you need stupid solutions for stupid problems... you mentioned you can enter backslashes which allows you to start escape sequences:

#Prints [
printf "\x5b"

#Prints ]
printf "\x5d"

So how to use it to write our file? Well, easy:

printf "\0x5bMatch\0x5d" >> 20-wired.network

# edit 20-wired.network
# Add whatever lines you can enter normally

printf "\0x5bNetwork\0x5d" >> 20-wired.network

# Continue...

You get the idea :-)

So I created another VM in my Synology NAS, loading an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS image. It took me to a few keyboard identification screens, and then gave me a terminal window with all the keys that I need to use. Problem solved, all I wanted was a working Linux VM where i can install the programs I need. I skip Archlinux for now, waiting for the day when Synology accepts it as part of their Virtual Machine solutions. I hope someone else from here will bring this issue up with Synology, it shouldn't be so hard to solve, but my time is too limited, and my knowledge about Archlinux too thin, to do it for your community. Sorry about that!
