I read and tried Xrandr#Adding_undetected_resolutions as well as searched the forum for other similar issues but without luck.
My GPU is Intel HD Graphics 5500 and my monitor's highest resolution and refresh rate are 2560x1440@44Hz.
Output of Xrandr:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3286 x 1239, maximum 8192 x 8192
XWAYLAND0 connected 1366x768+0+471 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 280mm x 160mm
1366x768 59.80*+
XWAYLAND1 connected 1920x1080+1366+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 600mm x 340mm
1920x1080 59.96*+From looking at the line with XWAYLAND1 you can see that I'm currently at 1920x1080@59.96Hz.
Not sure whether it's relevant but the monitor is connected in the following way:
[Laptop] --- [mDP to HDMI] --- [HDMI Cable] --- [Monitor]The mDP to HDMI is a passive adapter (the mDP port in my ThinkPad X250 is active).
Thanks.
Edit: DE is GNOME 3.32.2

You're on wayland - every X11 specific configuration (or xrandr) will be useless; the device you see is some sort of "emulation" to prevent xwayland clients from crashing.
You'll either have to use gnome on xorg or find a way to add the resolution to the compositor (no idea whether that's possible at all)
If you're switching to X11, try a modeline w/ reduced blanking

What am I to learn from this then? That Wayland isn't mature enough yet and when special cases (like mine?) arise I should go back to X11?
I'm not complaining or anything, I just want a conclusion...

You are to learn that you cannot configure wayland trough X11 :-P
The maturity and feature set of wayland completely rests w/ the used compositor - in your case mutter.
I guess your best chance is to change the resolution at the kernel, see https://raw.githubusercontent.com/torva … modedb.rst
60Hz w/ reduced blanking will probably yield better results than attempting a 44Hz config, but you'll have to try.

The problem was the mDP to HDMI adapter. I switched to a mDP-DP cable and the resolution & refresh rates are perfectly detected on both X11 and Wayland.
