Hello friendly and technical Arch community, I'm requesting your help with a recent problem I'm having with akonadi.
The hardware is a thinkpad laptop qwith core i5, 16GB RAM and fast SSD.
The issue started about a week ago, I put my laptop aside to run an errand and when I came back to it, it was apparently unresponsive to the point that it was impractical to unlock the session so I resort to do a power cycle. Then the situation started to repeat itself and I was able to identify the cause: RAM and swap were filled by akonadiserver taking over 14GB of RAM and a constant 95-100% of a CPU core. A simple akonadictil stop is enough to make the laptop usable again.
I have limited knowledge of akonadi, I do run akonadictl fsck and akonadictl vacuum after each upgrade and that's about it, I do dare using akonadiconsole.
I spent a couple hours searching the web and forums but failed to find a way to fix my issue, so I'm asking for your help.
Is there a way to understand what is causing the issue and to fix it ?
If not is there a way to reset the whole akonadi database and rebuild it from scratch ? if so what should I backup beforehands ?
Below are the technical details I have been able to gather.
akonadictl vacuum finishes swiftly and reports no issue

sorry about this, I edited my previous message.
I got something new. I tried running kmail from the command line and look at the output and among the usual Tokenizer warning and QXcbConnection: XCB error, I have this error twice:
org.kde.pim.messagelist: Circular reference loop detected in the message treetrying each folder one by one I have found which folder triggers this message but I do not know what I can do next.
is there a way to konw where this loop is inside the folder and to fix it ?
Looking at the akonadictl start output after this kmail session I have new elements:

Qt has caught an exception thrown from an event handler. Throwing
exceptions from an event handler is not supported in Qt.
You must not let any exception whatsoever propagate through Qt code.
If that is not possible, in Qt 5 you must at least reimplement
QCoreApplication::notify() and catch all exceptions there.

Without any help I was unable to fix this so I went for a full wipe of akonadi, I'm documenting here what I did as I have not found this information in my searches.
Close kmail and export the data I wanna backup using pimdataexporter
stop akonadi:
akonadictl stopcheck that no mysql or akonadi process are running:
ps ux | grep mysql
ps ux | grep akonadi Rename the akonadi folders:
mv ~/.local/share/akonadi ~/.local/share/akonadi.old
mv ~/.config/akonadi ~/.config/akonadi.oldmove the remaining akonadi files in .config away along with emailsidentities and mailtransports located in .config/
start akonadi:
akonadictl startAt this point I got bitten by the database error bug as described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=247480
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/63025
it seems the socket location has moved since that bug report, here are the update commands:
mysql --socket=/run/user/1000/akonadi/mysql.socket -e 'create database mysql'
mysql_upgrade --socket=/run/user/1000/akonadi/mysql.socketI stopped and restarted akonadi just in case:
akonadictl stop
akonadictl startnext step was importing the needed data using pimdataexporter, than laucnh kmail, check the config is okay and wait until it download the entire emails collection.
Hopefully this will be useful to someone else.

I just want to say thank you. Even after many years, your post here continues to be relevant and helpful. It helped me with my issues with Akonadi consuming all machine memory and CPU. I was a little tentative at first wondering if I might lose all my data. So I am pleasantly surprised that I was able to return the system to normalcy and without losing data. My sincere thanks again for an extremely useful post.
