[SOLVED]: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 - chromium, slack freezes

Hi,

I own a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 and I am experiencing the issues described here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Le … 620_issues

Chromium and Slack freeze randomly. Sometimes compton also freezes at the same time.
I always suspend the laptop when I go home. It happens most of the time after 2-3 days of not rebooting the computer.
I didn't have to disable the GuC/HuC firmware loading. It was never enabled.
I don't see anything in the logs when the error happens.

Can anyone help me to find out the problem here?
Anyone else having the same problem?

Thanks for your Help

Needs more information, which general environment, which kernel, which drivers? If you are currently using xf86-video-intel try without.

Re: [SOLVED]: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 - chromium, slack freezes

Hi

my kernel: Linux nbk 5.2.10-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Aug 25 18:01:31 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(I see this problem since I have the laptop somewhere around 5.1 release. Also tried manjaro before with mutiple different kernels 5.0 or 4.cantremember)

general environment: i3 (if thats what you meant)
installed drivers: mesa, xf86-video-intel
I'll remove xf86-video-intel and report back.

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED]: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 - chromium, slack freezes

Didn't have this issue since I removed the xf86-video-intel driver.
Need to find a way to set the backlight w/o xbacklight. I'll check the wiki.
I'll mark this as solved.

Just one question:
Any disadvantage not using this driver? What is used instead?
Thanks for your help

Re: [SOLVED]: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 - chromium, slack freezes

Xorg uses an internal modesetting driver instead, which uses 3D/general purpose (read not vendor dependant, all graphics drivers can theoretically use the modesetting driver) functions to render 2D operations that xf86-video-intel has customized code for. Will result in potentially reduced performance for 2D rendering (mostly relevant if you do not use a compositor, and even then it's usually not noticeable outside of tailored benchmarks) but it has a slew of it's own quirks. xf86-video-intel's development has stalled for a long time, and many intel developers are instead actively improving the modesetting driver.

A bit of a general rule of thumb, the newer your GPU the higher the chance you will have strange quirks and are better off with the modesetting driver (e.g. as a baseline Ubuntu and Fedora do default to use the modesetting driver for skylake+ models)
