I am trying to follow the instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … ild_System in the section Updating.
I can proceed with changing the version to match my own as required.
At the bottom of a bunch of steps in code, all of which were successful for me, there is:
Now one should manually merge, probably copy, the files at linux-tmp to the files by the same name at its parent directory. After which, the directory linux-tmp/, with all the files in it, can be deleted. Then run manually most, if not all, of PKGBUILD::prepare().
I have taken some extra stupid pills tonight and cannot figure out how to do that last sentence.
Looking at the sh-code of PKGBUILD shows me that manually==nearly impossible?
If I try to jump ahead and do
makepkg --verifysourceit validates with sha256sums but then runs into a roadblock
archlinux-linux ... Skipped
config ... Passed
60-linux.hook ... Passed
90-linux.hook ... Passed
linux.preset ... Passed
==> Verifying source file signatures with gpg...
archlinux-linux git repo ... SIGNATURE NOT FOUND
==> ERROR: One or more PGP signatures could not be verified!I am pretty sure it was a mistake to jump ahead, but how to I run prepare()? Use makepkg --nobuild? Or am I unrecoverably messed up?

archlinux-linux git repo ... SIGNATURE NOT FOUNDWas the version did you changed it to and is that version signed?

Supposedly I updated it from
5.2.10.arch1-1
to
5.2.14-arch2-1, the latter as specified from the canonical source for pacman.
Offline
Please post the PKGBUILD.
Edit:
Also please always post the full output from a command.

PKGBUILD is visible at

_srcver=_srcver=5.2.14-arch2Please try with
_srcver=5.2.14-arch2Offline
Oh My Goodness. Typo hell.
That took care of the SIGNATURE NOT FOUND error.
It also rewrote all the kernel config flags. I have to insert into PKGBUILD
make nconfig; make preparein place of the old
make olddefconfig.
I hope it is safe to do
makepkg -s because that is my next step.
EDIT:
NOPE:

so that a bash newbie can do it?

When I did a
git fetch --verboseit output
= [up to date] v5.2-arch1 -> v5.2-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2-arch2 -> v5.2-arch2
= [up to date] v5.2.1-arch1 -> v5.2.1-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.10-arch1 -> v5.2.10-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.11-arch1 -> v5.2.11-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.13-arch1 -> v5.2.13-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.14-arch1 -> v5.2.14-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.14-arch2 -> v5.2.14-arch2
= [up to date] v5.2.2-arch1 -> v5.2.2-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.3-arch1 -> v5.2.3-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.4-arch1 -> v5.2.4-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.5-arch1 -> v5.2.5-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.6-arch1 -> v5.2.6-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.7-arch1 -> v5.2.7-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.8-arch1 -> v5.2.8-arch1
= [up to date] v5.2.9-arch1 -> v5.2.9-arch1
= [up to date] v5.3-arch1 -> v5.3-arch1So does that mean I am doing "v5.3-arch1" instead of "v5.2.14-arch2 "?
I did
git checkout master
git pull
git fetch --tagand that printed as last line of output :::
* [new tag] v5.3-arch1 -> v5.3-arch1
I did not want to move into a new minor version.
Since all of the above were to manage an upgrade to a mostly-usual kernel, I bit the bullet and decided to redo the build from zero.
It is currently compiling the kernel modules. Nevertheless, there are holes in the Upgrade process that should be addressed.
Thanks to loqs for taking the time to work this with me.
This was not solved. I believe it should not reflect that in the title. How is something like that done? I read the rules, but nothing appeared.

It gives:

I am following the Kernel/Arch Build System wiki instruction page as closely as possible.

If you have not made any changes inside src that need to be preserved.
makepkg -CThis will remove the contents of the src directory before checking out the git tree again hopefully removing the ambiguity.
Offline
It completed the build ok.
Will try again.
(when I do it now, in build/linux/trunk, it gives
==> ERROR: The package group has already been built. (use -f to overwrite)
so I started again with a clean tree at ~/build/ and did
$ asp update linux
$ asp checkout linux
cd linux/trunk/
emacs PKGBUILD <<< to clean pkgbase and _pkgver
Copied the old config over the new one (so the interactive config would be moot) Then
updpkgsums
and
makepkg -C
as suggested.
Next I will do
makepkg -f
as suggested.

The following should now work
makepkg -fIf you wanted to preserve any changes you had made in src you would instead use.
makepkg -efOffline
Thank you to @loqs for all your help. I will mark this solved.
