XGL with Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB?

Hey guys, can you go fully XGL with a Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 with 64MB of VRAM? I know that the Xorg driver r200 doesn't work with XGL, but I was wondering if ATI's drivers will work. What are the minimum requirements for XGL on ATi cards (with the ATi drivers)?

It's not very clear but it seems there are DRI drivers for Radeon 9000 cards.
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon

So you could try even with the free drivers.

OTOH I've successfully run XGL on a intel integrated 865 and 900 chipsets and it worked.. a bit slow on the 865... but almost acceptable on the 900 (and it was from a live CD on a laptop).

I think your Radeon should be fine.

i've got a 7500 (almost identical to 9000), and it's too slow to be usable, even with just xgl and no compiz (not that that gives you anything, just as a test)

No, as I said above the r200 don't work. SLED 10 doesn't let me go XGL at all for example, it says that it doesn't support that gfx card. I had enabled XGL manually on my Arch box a year ago, and it was indeed too slow.

This is why I ask if the Ati's specific drivers work better. I need to know before I make the step to use ATi's proprietary drivers...

Re: XGL with Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB?

I just tried that LiveCD, and I indeed got what a gentoo wiki was describing for the 9000 line of cards: problems. XGL doesn't work properly with my card (fuzzy screen), no matter which one of the two drivers you use. This seems to be a bug on XGL though... Where could I file a bug report for that? Fdo or Novell, or somewhere else?

Re: XGL with Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB?

I tried the livecd on my desktop that has an ati x100 rv370 card (128 MB), the livecd would load the ati drivers with Xorg, and then i would get a black screen and nothing else.

This XGL business suck. The thing just doesn't work properly yet.

Re: XGL with Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB?

The R200 series have a problem with 3D visuals bigger than 2048x2048 (my dual screen setup is larger than that, 2560 is higher than 2048).

I tried getting AIGLX working on a Radeon 8500LE, which is in fact a faster version of the 9000. With single screen it worked, with dual it didn't due to the problem above. I only got metacity with the opengl compositor working, compiz didn't work, but that was back in the Xorg 7.1 RC1 days, could be that compiz works with AIGLX now.

Re: XGL with Ati Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB?

My screen is 1400x1050 for the r200 Radeon 9000 Mobility in my laptop.

But for my X100 128 MB card on my desktop PC that I also tried, I indeed have a dual screen (1280x1024 and 1200x1600).

Nevertheless, none of the two worked. The author sent me some pointers to modify the xorg.conf file manually and add some directives but I haven't try them. I will wait for 1-2 years before I retry XGL. I like stuff to work out of the box.
