Forum People... Please, get on IRC

the #archlinux channel on IRC is really slacking -- almost to the point where I'd say it is bad.  the arch linux forums are great.  there are lot of knowledgable people on the forums.  these people really need to get on irc to help out the community.  I really enjoy arch linux, and would like to see more and more people use it.  having a  better channel on irc would be a very good way of increasing arch linux's user base.

there are some very knowledgable arch linux people in #archlinux, the channel just needs more.

I can't stand IRC so you won't see me there.

Why not send the IRC people to the forums?

Another IRC-hater here. Are there Arch users who only use IRC?

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

Let's face it.  Many of the most useful IRC users don't even use Arch anymore!

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

I have tried going on IRC a few times, but it's normally pretty dead.

Dead? I don't find #archlinux dead. Indeed it is often buzzing with activity that much that I can rarely catch up with it. Are you sure you are talking about the right channel?

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

The OP is attempting to suggest that the IRC channel could use some additional interested persons that might normally be more forum-driven to spend a little time in another medium to help Arch users, and thereby spread the quality community support of the distro.

There is no purpose in responding that "You won't see me there because I hate it." If you don't like it then just stay away and that's fine. But to be venomous for its own sake is in poor taste. It could also dissuade others from trying such an option for reasons that have nothing to do with facts at hand.

I guess it's just when I log in everyone goes "oh sh*t, it's arooaroo, let's get out of here!"

I guess things are better on different timezones.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

IRC is a big distraction if you want to do anything remotely useful. However, it may be all you have at some times to seek help for a broken system but this is  too rare to be considered imho.

My IRC client autojoins #archlinux, but I am one of the idlers there usually.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

No - not in this thread, anyway.

You could just ask "Which server is #archlinux on?", in which case I would answer "freenode". wink

Link.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

Seems to me that the biggest problem with IRC is that old posts aren't searchable (or newer ones if you're not signed on). At lesast that's what I saw in a brief encounter with Puppy's IRC.

It has it's place, but it's usefulness seems limited by that.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

IRC is an excellent way to get realtime help. i have used it for that purpose for year's. i also have a channel of my own on gamesurge, for my DoD:S clan. we can setup scrimages, matches. or just plain'ol talk shit to each other. alot of real companies use it for support purpose's aswell. IRC is more than just chat..
